programing that she learned about Sensei Legros and his program.
The Starrett Judo Club’s success over the decades spread like wildfire
not just among the residents in SCT, but in the martial arts community as
well. The judokas earned medals and trophies in city, state, regional, and
even international matches. The sheer number of awards could be seen
spilling over trophy display cases and stacked onto shelves within 1310

Washington enrolled her son, and it was not long after she saw a shift in
Bailey’s personality and work ethic. Legros is the personification of a father
figure, Washington said, he both nurture’s his students with lessons that
go beyond the mat and into life. He teaches them respect, responsibility,
compassion, and more.
“I was amazed how Mr. Legros’ work influenced my son to become a
better student in school. He became a better child overall, and he’s more
attentive to little details. He takes constructive criticism really well coming
from Mr. Legros in judo,” Washington said.
But most important of all, Washington says that Legros envelops his
lessons with love, and this is what inspired her to become an Assistant
Coach. She has worked with the Starrett Judo Club for over seven years
and cherishes each moment she is able to bond with the children.
“I didn’t even know I had these skills in me until I started working with
the kids and Mr. Legros. I have the ability to teach the kids and to love
them and move forward and learn a lot from this program,” Washington
said.

Education Matters
Tips for Parents and Kids to Stay Organized This
Back-to-School Season
(StatePoint) The start of a new
school year carries with it so much
potential, particularly when stu-
dents — and their parents — stay
organized. Amid the back-to-school
chaos, use these tips and gear
recommendations to help keep
everyone on track, whether they are
at school, at home or on-the-go:

Notes and Big Ideas

Color-coded notebooks and bin-
ders, along with labeled dividers,
can help you keep your coursework
straight and your note-taking organ-
ized. Take your color-coding a step further by extending the concept to the
tools you write with. Pilot Pen’s G2 gel pen is a go-to for busy students and
parents with its smooth, long-lasting gel ink that’s able to keep up with
busy schedules. Science has shown that writing a to-do list with an
appealing color can lead to greater productivity. Inspired by color trends
and color psychology, the G2 Harmony Collection colors were developed to
promote balance, relaxation and hope, helping students get more done,
stay positive and achieve their highest potential this school year. G2 is
available in four point sizes and over 35 colors, so it’s ideal for note-taking,
writing down big ideas, goal-setting and more.

Planning and Scheduling

With the back-to-school season comes a flurry of planning and schedul-
ing — from after-school activities to field trips. Parents and kids alike can
stay on top of all the last-minute changes with a desk calendar and an
erasable pen. Pilot’s FriXion line of erasable pens and markers write
smooth and erase clean, so you can edit plans as often as they change. It’s
much easier to remember tasks and events when you’ve recorded the
details in a central location, so start a habit of entering all activities into
your calendar as soon as they’re planned. The smooth gel ink and precise
point of the FriXion Synergy Clicker is great for detailed planning, while
FriXion Fineliner brings colorful, mistake-free writing to notes and
calendars. Starrett Early Learning Center

L’Shana Tova, It’s Rosh Hashanah!

During Rosh Hashanah it is customary to eat symbolic foods such as
apples dipped in honey which is a tradition to evoke a “sweet new year.”
Other foods with symbolic meanings may be served, such as the head of a
fish (to symbolize the prayer “let us be the head and not the tail”). It is
customary to have big feasts on both nights of Rosh Hashanah and there
are a plethora of customary dishes, including: honey cake, brisket, tzimmes
and more Rosh Hashanah recipes.

There are many traditions associated with Rosh Hashanah including

symbolic foods.
lAs mentioned above, there is the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on
both mornings.
lEvery evening, candles are lit. Candles are often a symbol of
remembrance.
lSpicy, sharp, or sour foods are avoided in favor of sweet delicacies,
representing wishes for a sweet and pleasant year (not a bitter year).

Some of the symbolic foods include:

lApples dipped in honey (on the first night)
lChallah (egg bread) dipped in honey.
lA new seasonal fruit (on the second night).
Pomegranates (as its many seeds symbolize the hope that the year will be
rich with many blessings).

BY: PAMELA STERN

On Tuesday, August 22nd, 18 members of Spring Creek

Senior Partners (SCSP) took a trip to New York State (NYS)
Senator Roxanne Persaud’s Fun Day at Canarsie Park. The
SCSP members took a bus that was provided from the SCSP
office at 12:30pm and returned back to the SCSP office at 4pm.
NYS Senator Persaud’s fun day ran from 1pm to 4pm and
included; a Back to School backpack giveaway (child had to be
present), school supplies, personal hygiene supplies. water
bottles, key chains, and fanny packs.
Additionally, it was a carnival like atmosphere with a balloon
artist, a magician, stilt walkers, raffles, refreshments, and so
much more! There was a variety of musical genres playing
throughout the event. Everyone in attendance was able to play
games there as well. Some of the games they were able to play
were: large checkers, chess, connect four, and there was even a
beanbag toss game! This was a great ending to the summer and
the weather cooperated as well. This was a free event that was
open to the public.
Jahiah Wilson, Director of Spring Creek Senior Partners said,
“Community consist of bridging the gap between the youth and
the older adults. This event brought together the younger
generation and the older generation.”
