1.4. CONSOLE MANUALS

The Console System comes with the following technical manuals:

• ‘HP XW8200 Workstation Getting Started Guide’; this contains the basic information about the
workstation installation including some troubleshooting information.

The XW8200 Technical Reference Guide is not distributed with the workstation, but it’s available in
PANORAMA software CD as a PDF-file (file “\HPXW8200\docs\c00213033-HPWorkstation-xw8200-
ServiceAndTechnicalReferenceGuide(Complete).pdf”). The XW8200 Technical Reference Guide
contains detailed technical information about the workstation hardware and troubleshooting. Please
read it if you’re unsure about workstation technical handling.

2. Hardware Installation
2.1. PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKS
2.1.1. READ THE WORKSTATION’S “TECHNICAL REFERENCE GUIDE”
Read the workstations “Technical Reference Guide” manual to learn the detailed instructions on how to
handle the workstations hardware, such as opening the covers, adding disks and adapters, etc.

2.1.2. OPEN THE SYSTEM UNIT

CAUTION

To avoid system damage from static discharge, use the Disposable Grounding Wrist Strap. In case
one is not available, touch bare (unpainted) metal on the system before you touch anything inside the
system.

1. Make sure that the system is turned off and the power cord is unplugged.
2. Remove the Access Panel of the workstation.

2.2.3. INSTALL THE MAGNETO-OPTICAL (MO) DISK DRIVE

1. Check the MO-drive’s jumper settings.

SCSI connector

4 2
HP-C1113M: Has a 20-pin mini-connector, which is located on the left (from the rear) of the SCSI
connector. Jumpers should be in locations 2 and 4 from the right (SCSI ID1 and SCSI Parity signals).
The SCSI ID of the drive will then be set to 2. (Note: there are no terminators in C1113M). The DIP
switches (2 x 8), on top of the C1113M drive should all be set to OFF (default factory setting).

2. Install the MO-drive to the workstation:

• Remove the two black plastic guide rails from their storage locations in the workstation.
• Insert these two Guide Rails to the MO-drive (Note: no screws needed).
• Remove the bottom plastic blank from the Front Panel of the workstation.
• Remove the bottom metal blank from the Accessory Chassis.
• Insert the MO-drive into the bottom shelf of the Accessory Chassis.
3. Connect the ‘SCSI I/II CABLE 3x IDC50F’:
• Attach the ‘SCSI-I/II Active IDC50M TERMINATOR’ to the last Device Connector in the SCSI
cable.
• Connect the MO-drive to one of the free Device Connectors of the SCSI cable
• Connect the System Board Connector of the SCSI Cable to the ‘Adaptec 2904’ (Narrow 50-pin
SE SCSI Connector).
• IMPORTANT: Ensure that the cable does not cover the CPU or power supply fans.
4. Install the ‘Adaptec 2904 SCSI card’ into Slot 1.
5. Connect the power cable to the MO-drive.

2.2.4. INSTALL THE VIDEO CABLE

To connect the LCD monitor to the workstation, attach the “DMS-59 to Dual DVI Cable” (DL139A) to
the workstation’s video connector and connect the DVI cable from the LCD’s accessories to the “DMS-
59 to Dual DVI Cable’s” connector 1.

In case you must use VGA-cables, the “DMS-59 to dual VGA cable” can be found in the workstation’s
accessories.
