The design of the insert bearing retainer, used with rocking piston pin assemblies on 645 EA, EB, EC, F, FB and 710 G, GA, GB turbocharged engines, has been changed to climinate incidence of failures due to bending fatigue of the retaining bolt. The size of the retaining bolt has been increased from 1/4-20 x 1/2" to 5/16-24 x 1°. This larger bolt allows the application torque to be increased from 12 ft-lbs (16.4 Nem) to 27-30 ft-lbs (36.6-40.7 Nem). Also, the bearing retainer has been shortened slightly to reduce the bending load on the retaining bolt. Due to the improved fastening provided by the larger bolt and shortened retainer, the locking clip P/N 9536664 is no longer required. March 1993 The new piston carricr and associated hardware are now available through the EMD parts department for both the 645 and 710 engine applications as follows: Carrier-Piston P/N 40039258 replaces P/N 8442120 Retainer-Insert Bearing P/N 40039257 replaces P/N 9548905 Bolt-Special P/N 40039256 replaces P/N 9547667 NOTE request. A drill fixture, to convert piston carrier P/N 8442120 to P/N 40039258, can be made using EMD tool drawing no. WS-45549 available by Requests for tool drawings should be addressed to: ELECTRO-MOTIVE DIVISION GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION 9301 W. 55th Street La Grange, IL. 60525 and marked to the ATTENTION OF: Mr. josta, Technical Publ ss Dey GOVERNOR “ORS” SPRING REPLACEMENT A new conical design spring has been developed to replace the current Straight spring (P/ No. 8113836) under the overriding solenoid (ORS) piston in all PGR governors. This new design will improve reliability levels Compared to the current design by eliminating potential spring breakage due to excessive vibration. ACTION REQUIRED: The existing straight spring should be replaced with the new conical design (under the same P/ No. 8113836) on the next overhaul or disassembly of all PGR governors having the overriding (ORS) solenoid. 1. Place the new co: small end up against the piston spring seat. | spring in the piston cavity, large end down, and CAUTION could make it necessary to completely disassemble the governor. Should the old spring be broken, use care to be certain that all pieces have been removed from the cavity before replacing with the new spring. Do NOT drop any pieces into the governor as this 2. After replacing the spring, stamp “ORS” on the nameplate next to the serial number. ) SEALANT COMPOUNDS FOR REBUILD WATER PUMPS The following compounds are being released for use primarily in the rebuilding of water pumps: 40042603 Sealant, Supplementary Anaerobic 40042604 Scaling Compound, RTV engine fluid & high temp. compatible The 40042603 compound is intended for use as a supplementary gasket “dressing” to enhance gasket scaling on flanges that (due to neglect, wear, or corrosion) have incurred surface blemishes. Surface damages (such as seratches, gouges, and corrosion pitting) represent potential leak paths that @ gasket may not scal entirely. Therefore, this compound can be used in conjunction with a gasket to ensure a water tight seal on a damaged flange surface. In order for the compound application to provide a reliable seal, the surface blemish should be no decper than .020 inch and NOT extend across the entire width of the flange. Also, the compound must be applied sparingly on flange surfaces that have been degreased and cleaned free of corrosion and other loose debris. The recommended full-cure time is 24 hours (the substance being cured becomes “tack-free” after 90 minutes). Since this compound is Anacrobic, only the amount that is trapped between flanges will cure. Thus, all excess compound that “oozes” out of the joint during torquing must be wiped away before putting the pump in service. CAUTION Extreme care must be excercised when removing the excess compound 80 as to not contaminate the water pump bushing mirror surface, carbon and rubber seals, as well as the shaft and bearings. ‘The 40042604 scaling compound is a high temperature (400°F Max.) RTV Silicone that is resistant to the long-term corrosion effects of engine oil on ordinary Silicone RTV. This compound is recommended for use at the impeller end bearing hore of the water pump support housing, as described in the water pump overhaul instructions in EMD Engine Maintenance Manuals. The RTV should be applied sparingly with a clean instrument (or finger) on a degreased surface that is free of corrosion and other loose debris. Care must be exercised to prevent excess RTV from entering the sealed bearings, This compound has a recommended full-cure time of 24 hours and becomes “tack-free” after 30 minutes. Other Applications: Both of these compounds may be used in other engine areas as a means of providing a “fix” for minor fluid leaks. Both com- Pounds must be applied sparingly and on degreased surfaces. The 40042603 ‘compound should always be used as a supplement to a gasket, not as a substitute, Extreme care must always be exercised to prevent excess com- Pound from entering fluid conduits and/or contaminating other areas. The Tecommended full-cure times should be observed before resuming engine operation. It should be noted that even minor leaks may turn out to be symptoms of more serious problems. Thus, good maintenance practice should be followed to determine whether or not fixing a leak with a sealing compound is a reasonable alternative to attacking the root cause. WIPER CONTROL VALVE FOR “JUMBO” MOTORS In November of 1990, Modernization Recommendation (MODREC) M.I. 9679 REV. “A,” titled: REPLACEMENT OF TRICO WINDSHIELD WIPERS, was released. This publication was necessary due to the fact that Trico wiper motors were soon to be unavailable, and EMD recommended that customers replace their Trico wiper motors with those from Sprague Devices which featured a “Jumbo” motor. For customers who chose to upgrade from the Trico to the Sprague Devices equipment, MODRIC M.1. 9682 was released in January of 1993. This publication recommended that customers could further upgrade their Sprague Devices “Jumbo” motor with the new IP100 motor, also manu- factured by Sprague. This recommendation was based on’ the HP100 motor’s improved reliability, quieter service, longer service life, and lower cost. The new motor also has an automatic parking feature which elimi- nates the need for a “Jumbo” type handle on the motor for manual parking. Anticipating that the I1P100 motor would one day replace the “Jumbo” motor, Sprague utilized control valve #2337450 that would operate either the “Jumbo” or IIP100, This valve, however, has a “park-under-pressure” feature. When the main reservoir pressure drops below 60 psi, it is possible for parked “Jumbo” motors to activate. If the customer chooses NOT to upgrade the “Jumbo” motor to the HP100, EMD recommends that the #2337450 control valve be replaced with a #9316239 wiper control valve. This new valve will eliminate the inadvertant wiper activation problems. These valves are easily changed, however, the new #9316239 valve is smaller and may require some minor tubing adjustments in order to reconnect it to the motor.
