4th Christmas American Math Olympiad (Day 1)

March 13, 2023

CAMO 1. In a barn, 100 chicks sit peacefully in a circle. Initially, each chick faces
either the chick immediately to her left or the chick immediately to her right. Suddenly,
each chick starts turning towards her other neighbor (at possibly variable but nonnegative
speed) until she faces her. Two chicks make eye contact if at some point in time, they face
each other simultaneously. What is the maximum possible number of pairs of chicks that
make eye contact during the process (including at the beginning and end)?

CAMO 2. Let ω1 and ω2 be circles intersecting at A and B. Points C lies on ω1 and D

lies on ω2 such that AD and BC are parallel. Lines AC and BD intersect at S. Assume
that S is exterior to both ω1 and ω2 . Prove that there is a point U on ω1 and a point V
on ω2 such that line SU is tangent to ω1 , line SV is tangent to ω2 , and line AB bisects
UV .

CAMO 3. A polynomial is binary if all of its nonzero coefficients equal 1. Let P (x),
Q(x), and R(x) be polynomials with integer coefficients such that R(x) = xn · Q(1/x) for
some integer n. Prove that if P (x) · Q(x) is binary, then P (x) · R(x) is binary.

Time: 4 hours and 30 minutes.

CAMO 4. Let c be an integer. Prove that there are only finitely many pairs of positive
integers (a, b) satisfying j √ a k
3+2 2 = 2b + c.

(Here, ⌊x⌋ denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x.)

CAMO 5. Determine all functions f : C → C such that

• there are only finitely many complex numbers x with f (x) = 0, and
• for all complex numbers x, y, z satisfying f (x) = yz, we have zf (x + y) = yf (x + z).

CAMO 6. Let P be a convex polygon, and let 2P be P scaled by a factor of 2. Prove

that 2P may be covered by seven congruent copies of P. (A polygon contains its interior
and boundary.)

Time: 4 hours and 30 minutes.
