Description : Ammonia Manufacturing Process
• The raw material for making ammonia used is natural gas with the main composition
of Methane (CH4) around 70% and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) around 10%.
• Steam or water vapor is obtained from river water after experiencing a certain
processing process at the Utility Plant.
• While air is obtained from the environment, where before this air is used as process
air, it is pressed first by an air compressor.
The process is divided into 4 units, in the following order:
1. Feed Treating Unit
2. Reforming Unit
3. Purification & Methanation
4. Compression Synloop & Refrigeration Unit
1. Feed Treating Unit
Natural gas that still contains impurities, especially sulfur compounds before entering
the Reforming Unit must be cleaned first in this unit, so as not to cause poisoning to the catalyst
in the Reforming Unit. To remove sulfur compounds contained in natural gas, the natural gas
is passed in a vessel called a desulfurizer. This sulfur-free natural gas is then sent to the
Reforming Unit.
2. Reforming Unit
In the Reforming Unit clean natural gas is mixed with water vapor, heated, then reacted in
the Primary Reformer, the reaction results in the form of Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide gases
are sent to the Secondary Reformer and reacted with air so that the following gases are
produced:
• Hydrogen
• Nitrogen
• Carbon Dioxide
The gases from this reaction are sent to the Purification and Methanation Unit to be separated
from carbon dioxide gas.
3. Purification & Methanation
Carbon dioxide in the gas resulting from the Reforming Unit reaction is separated first
in the Purification Unit, the separated carbon dioxide is sent as raw material for the Urea Plant.
The remaining carbon dioxide carried in the process gas, will cause toxins in the Ammonia
Catalyst Converter, therefore before this process gas is sent to the Synloop & Refrigeration
Unit it first goes to the Methanator.
4. Compression Synloop &; Refrigeration Unit
The process gas that comes out of the Methanator with a ratio of Hydrogen and Nitrogen Gas
= 3: 1 is pressed or compressed to reach the desired pressure by the Ammonia Converter for
the reaction to occur
formation, this steam then enters the Refrigeration Unit so that ammonia is obtained in the
liquid phase.
