2 SMD QUANTUM MKIII INTRODUCTION

QUANTUM is a heavy duty construction work class vehicle and the largest ROV in SMD’s Work Class ROV range.
The system incorporates features borne from operational feedback to ensure SMD ROV systems remain at the
forefront of ROV technology. The result is a system capable of meeting customer expectations today and in the
future and combines high performance with rugged construction and unparalleled performance and stability. It
has been designed to provide underwater manipulative services for operators working primarily in oil and gas
subsea construction/intervention but also capable of well/drill support, dredging/cleaning operations, survey,
power tool deployment, salvage and object recovery.

The latest generation of enhanced Curvetech components form the basis of QUANTUM. These include compact
intelligent valve packs, flexible distributed control and Curvetech thrusters and powerpacks.

SMD’s cutting edge Distributed Vehicle Control System II (DVECS2), reduces bottom end complexity by minimising
the processing carried out subsea. This improves reliability by keeping the complex hardware at the surface. The
compact subsea control pod acts in a similar fashion to a network hub distributing control signals to each subsea
component such as the Intelligent Thruster Control unit (iTCU) and Intelligent Hydraulic Control Unit (iHCU) as well
as third party transducers and sensors via RS485, RS232 and Ethernet. Communication between the surface and
subsea is via high speed fibre optic data link. Due to the design of the control system, further functions and
capabilities can be added very easily at a later date.

The PLC/SCADA based DVECS2 control system is exceptionally reliable and robust with advanced diagnostics. A
fully switchable video wall is used to display video and sonar images, pilot and observer information and diagnostic
data. The size and configuration of the screens, as well as what is displayed, can be customised to suit requirements.
The control console caters for pilot and co-pilot. It incorporates main vehicle controls (via joystick), switchgear and
two touch screen computers. Control desk panels can be customised to suit customer preference. The surface
control unit and power distribution system can be supplied free standing for building into the vessel or housed
within a 20ft cabin.

The QUANTUM system can be complimented with a choice of SMD TMS system as well as SMD manufactured
launch and recovery equipment. SMD are the only Work Class ROV manufacturer to offer the complete turnkey
WROV package.

SMD is the largest independent Work Class ROV manufacturer in the world. We have over 40 years experience
designing and manufacturing ROVs as well as some of the world’s most complex subsea machines. SMD prides
itself on delivering reliable, high performance and well respected subsea vehicles.

8 TRAINING

SMD has a dedicated training department within Services. SMD training can deliver a range of courses
from beginner to advanced and from Trenchers to ROV’s covering the full portfolio of SMD
products. Training can be conducted at our facility in the UK or for an additional cost it can be delivered
on a client’s site or alongside on the vessel.

The following training information is typical and indicative; the training programme will be tailored to suit
client requirements.

8.1 Levels

Foundation Level – designed for personnel with limited of no subsea experience but who have
transferable skills and knowledge from other industries and who meet the minimum industry entry
requirements as detailed in IMCA document IMCA C 005 and IMCA R002. This level of training would
broadly follow modules 1 to 3 detailed in IMCAs guidance document R002 which consist of:

• Module 1 – Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ)

• Module 2 – ROV Industry

• Module 3 – Background and Introduction to ROV System Operation

(Depending upon experience some personnel could bypass modules 1 to 3 and commence at module 4
as defined by IMCA document R010.)

• Module 4 ROV electrical systems

• Module 5 ROV electronic and control systems

• Module 6 ROV mechanical and hydraulic systems

• Module 7 ROV system/equipment maintenance

• Module 8 ROV system/equipment operations

• Module 9 ROV tooling and ancillary sensors

• Module 10 lifting operations

Note: the term ROV is used in a generic sense depending upon the customers’ business focus this could
meaning WROV, burial system or mining.
39
8.1.1 Level 1 – Operator Level.

Operator training as implied by the name focuses on the development of knowledge to allow the safe and
effective operation of an SMD ROV system. It provides the delegate with an overview of how an SMD ROV
systems operates and covers the basic principles of operation of all major system elements which
together form an SMD ROV system. Operator level courses do not cover areas protected by the system
administration password such as scaling and system configuration menus.

8.1.2 Level 2 – Technician.

Level 2 training builds upon the learning delivered in the level 1 courses and focuses on the detailed
technical principles of operation of all major system elements which together form an SMD ROV system.
Delegates will learn how to replace and configure all major system components and level 2 training covers
all systems functions protected by the system administrator password, including system configuration,
scaling etc. Level 2 training is aim at personnel who will form the technical authority responsible for
delivering exceptional asset availability and performance on and offshore such as submersible engineers,
system technical support engineers/specialists. Access to level 2 training is via either completion of level
1 training or by demonstration of extensive operational and technical experience with relevant systems
and technologies.

8.1.3 Level 3 – Engineer.

Level 3 training is aimed at personnel working as mobilisation engineers or advanced system support
specialists. Level 3 training gives personnel access to manufacturer level menus within the control system
and once complete, personnel will be able to perform software upgrades to SMD systems and apply
advanced fault finding and system configuration techniques. Access to Level 3 courses is via completion
of a level 2. Due to the nature of this training personnel attending level 3 training must be highly PC
literate and have extensive experience of SMD systems working a level equivalent to our level 2 training.

Modules at level 1, 2 and 3 include:

• Electrical Power Distribution (W, T, M)

• Control Systems (W, T, M)
• Mechanical Systems (W, T, M)
• Hydraulic systems (W, T, M)
• LARS (W, T, M)

40
(Note W = WROV, T = trenching /tractors and ploughs, M = mining)

Additional technical modules to include equipment specific modules such a cable pipe tracking, thruster
maintenance, fibre optic termination, umbilical re-termination).
