When the going is good, don’t be so arrogant as to believe that a crisis or a setback can not happen to you

Good times may not last but good people do.

When we go through what looks like a never-ending crisis, it’s good

*** Nếu âm tiết thứ hai là một âm tiết yếu (có chứa những âm như /ə/, /ɪ/, ……) thì trọng âm thường
nằm ở âm tiết thứ nhất:
Verbs: enter /ˈentə(r)/, envy /ˈenvi/
Adjectives: handsome /ˈhænsəm/, lazy /ˈleɪzi/
2. Danh từ:
- Nếu âm tiết thứ hai có chứa một nguyên âm ngắn (/ə/, /ɪ/, /ʊ/, /ɒ/, /æ/, /ʌ/ và /e/) thì trọng âm thường
nằm ở âm tiết thứ nhất:
Ví dụ: money /ˈmʌni/, product /ˈprɒdʌkt/,
- Nếu âm tiết thứ hai là một nguyên âm dài hay một nguyên âm đôi (như /aɪ/, /ɔː/, /eɪ/, …) thì trọng âm
thường nằm ở âm tiết thứ hai: (Nguyên âm dài là nguyên âm có hai dấu chấm “:” ở cạnh, còn nguyên
âm đôi là nguyên âm kết hợp từ 2 nguyên âm đơn)
Ví dụ: machine /məˈʃiːn/, balloon /bəˈluːn/
B. TỪ CÓ BA ÂM TIẾT
+ Từ ba âm tiết thường có trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ nhất
Ví dụ: cinema /ˈsɪnəmə/, calendar /ˈkælɪndə(r)/ ….
+ Tiền tố thường không làm ảnh hưởng tới trọng âm của từ (Lưu ý: tiền tố là thành phần đứng trước của
1 từ gốc, ví dụ: từ gốc happy (vui vẻ), thêm tiền tố ‘un’ thành unhappy (không vui).
Ví dụ: abnormal /æbˈnɔːml/, empower /ɪmˈpaʊə(r)/, disconnect /ˌdɪsəˈpruːv/ ……..
C. TỪ CÓ BỐN HOẶC TRÊN BỐN ÂM TIẾT

+ Từ có bốn hoặc trên bốn âm tiết thường có trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ nhất (nếu không có những hậu tố
đặc biệt được nêu ở các quy tắc sẽ được đề cập phía sau
Ví du: necessary /ˈnesəsəri/, difficulty /ˈdɪfɪkəlti/, ……
+ Tiền tố hay hậu tố cũng thường không ảnh làm ảnh hưởng tới trọng âm của từ có 4 hoặc tren 4 âm tiết.
Ví dụ: questionable /ˈkwestʃənəbl/, unhappiness /ʌnˈhæpinəs/, ……

Ngoại lệ: enormous /ɪˈnɔːməs/, tremendous /trəˈmendəs/, ……

Những từ được tạo thành bởi hai gốc từ, trọng âm thường rơi vào gốc đầu:

Tính từ ghép thường có trọng âm chính nhấn vào từ thứ 1, nhưng nếu tính từ ghép mà từ đầu tiên
là tính từ hay trạng từ (Adjective or adverb) hoặc kết thúc bằng đuôi - ED thì trọng âm chính lại
nhấn ở từ thứ 2 .

Khi các động từ có quy tắc ở dạng quá khứ hay quá khứ phân từ ta thêm biến tố -ed vào cuối động từ.

A. -s, -es
Trong các danh từ số nhiều hay các động từ chia ở ngôi thứ ba số ít ở thì hiện tại, ta có biến tố -s hoặc -es
vào cuối từ.
Ex: He watches TV.
He has two watches.
Cách đọc –s và –es
1. /iz/
s, ss misses, kisses,…

Một số từ kết thúc bằng –ed được dùng làm tính từ, đuôi –ed được phát âm là /id/
