INTRODUCTION
K.H. Ahmad Dahlan is one of the famous
Islamic figures in Indonesia. There are many
contributions he made in terms of thought,
religion, social politics, and education in
Indonesia in the 20th century.

K.H. Ahmad Dahlan or his real
name, Muhammad Darwis, was
born in Kauman, Yogyakarta on 1
August 1868.
He is the fourth child of seven
siblings.
His father, K.H Abu Bakar Bin Kyai

and preacher in Masijd Besar

K.H. Ahmad Dahlan never got a When he was a teenager, K.H.

The ability to read and write was
taught by his father.
When he was eight years old, he
managed to read Al-Quran
fluently.
Ahmad Dahlan started to read the
learn Islamic subjects.
He learned several subjects from
various Islamic preachers at that
time which made his knowledge
about the religion become bigger.

Ahmad Dahlan continue his studies
in Makkah and performed Haji
there.
After several years, he then came
back to Makkah again and stayed
there for around 2 years to
continue his studies.
Along with more echoes of thought
renewal in the Islamic world, while
studying in Makkah, K.H. Ahmad Dahlan
also began to have a tendency to
delving into the thought of Islamic
reform.
He began to study and find out the
meaning of Islamic reform,
which he later developed in Indonesia.

Jamaluddin al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh, and Rashid Ridha.
After his father passed away, K.H. Ahmad Dahlan replaced his father’s

the services of K.H. Ahmad Dahlan in
raising the awareness of the Indonesian nation through
Islamic reform and education, then the Government of the Republic
Indonesia designates him as a National Hero with
Presidential Decree no. 657 of 1961.
