Creating Your Own Name in Chinese

Direction : Study how the names of Chinese are derived or given by their
parents. Look at the example below which is the Chinese
name of your professor.

黄 : huang means yellow or golden

玉: yù means Jade

美: Měi means beautiful

Overall Meaning is : 美丽的玉 Měilì de yù : Beautiful golden Jade

❖ Remember: Choosing a Chinese name is an opportunity to reinvent yourself,

but names should be chosen carefully, as they are an important part of


making a good first impression.

❖ In Chinese, the surname comes before the first name or given name. In

English we often call a surname a last name, but in Chinese it always comes
first! Also please remember Chinese names have three (3) characters only.
