Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines, and Filipino youth, particularly

teenagers, love playing this sport. Basketball's strategic, dynamic and enthusiastic nature makes

it the most rewarding game for young Filipino players and spectators. Even the smallest villages

in the Philippines have a basketball court.

In the basketball, scoreboard is an important indicator. It provides not only scores as well

as playing time. A basketball scoreboard will at the minimum display the time left in the period

and both team's scores. The last minute of each quarter is usually displayed with tenths of a

second, which is required in the Game. The scoreboard for basketball is a spectacle that all fans

love to look at, It is a major aspect of today’s game and has come a long way since the times

when we used to change the scorecards manually.

The researchers noticed that the Tagoloan Community College basketball court doesn’t

have a Scoreboard in some events especially on the departmental days there are no scoreboard

usually they will just tally the scores. And also the court that has its own scoreboard when rainy

days or problem with the electrical wirings on the streets, most of the time when the shortage

happen the game will be postponed then the schedule of the games will be delayed. To avoid that

it will happen the researchers idea is to innovate the scoreboard to make it rechargeable.

The scoring system improved by implementing this study.Wang (2018)Aim to the current

popularity of various sports which scoring device is inconvenient and defective scoring, this

design uses 51 MCU control, battery power, digital display, input keys and wireless control

module to develop a portable smart match electronic scoring device. The device has a charging
indicator, ball selection, single-sided display settings, size of the Bureau of scores shows that

beep audio prompts, change sides scores mobile, long distance remote control and other

functions; particularly compact and portable, which one could keep working dozens of hours

without any power, and you can add large-screen display, which perfectly suited all size of table

tennis, badminton, volleyball and basketball games in the stadiums.

Jahagirdar (2018)The idea of electronics multipurpose scoreboard is about low cost

efficient for various sports and games scoreboard and timer (Game clock, short clock). The

scoreboard of any sports/games shows the status of the ongoing match or game by displaying

data like timer and scores of each teams. Scoreboards are used for various features. Scoreboard is

specially used for displaying scores of each team played between two teams. Some games can be

a timer based or an untimed. Players and viewers rely on the numerical figures that are shown on

the scoreboard especially the scores of each team and the game clock to determine which team is

winning. This scoreboard displaying data in form of seven 7-segment displays by made up of

LEDs that can be remotely controlled programmable clock and scoring board. In this scoreboard

controlled clock and scoreboard status wired as well wireless. This paper has the future of multi-

sport scoreboard that is cost efficient, portable, and easy to use.

According to Zietara (2018) solar panel is a device tends to transform radiant heat

coming from the sun into electricity. With the challenges in the scarcity of energy, different

movements initiated by different countries around the globe are on the run. However, new

challenges arise questioning the effectiveness of the solar panel in generating electricity.
The study aims to innovate a Scoreboard to have his own power source. In the allotted 5

months the researchers will carry out the study.

barangay in the municipality of tagoloan. The respondent of this study are engineering students

and instructors. .This study was focused on the development portable electronic scoreboard in

outdoor games in deferent villages in the Philippines. This project is for ball leagues that will be

held on Tagoloan Community College (TCC). The rechargeable electronic scoreboard provides

an option when the brown outs during a intense ball games. That manages to run even if there

was a brown out.

This project was specifically for the usage of the students and instructions of Tagoloan

Community College (TCC) and also the Municipality of Tagoloan. The rechargeable electronic

scoreboard was built within five months during the class year 2022-2023. The materials in

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Review of Related Literature

Development of Portable Ball Game Electronic Scoreboard

According to Wang (2018) Aim to the current popularity of various sports which scoring

device is inconvenient and defective scoring, this design uses 51 MCU control, battery power,

digital display, input keys and wireless control module to develop a portable smart match

electronic scoring device. The device has a charging indicator, ball selection, single-sided

display settings, size of the Bureau of scores shows that beep audio prompts, change sides scores

mobile, long distance remote control and other functions; particularly compact and portable,

which one could keep working dozens of hours without any power, and you can add large-screen

display, which perfectly suited all size of table tennis, badminton, volleyball and basketball

games in the stadiums.

As stated by Liao&Wang (2015) the development of multimedia technology and the

appearance of information highway, the storage and transmission of digital video has become a

less difficult issue. Various sport games bring the explosive expanding of sport video, therefore,

efficient analysis of sport video is necessary. An algorithm of detection and location for

scoreboard is proposed. Firstly, the template of scoreboard is built using multidimensional

correlation, it involves the location and the detection parameter. Then the scoreboard is located

by the template matching.

Solar Scoreboard

According to Ruben (2014)The main result of this project was the design of an electrical

system that powers Swarthmore's baseball scoreboard using solar energy. This energy is

harvested through 2 Kyocera KC130TM photovoltaic panels. These are connected in series to a

Morning Star ProStar PS-30M PWM Solar Battery Charge Controller, which maximizes the

power output of the solar panels, monitors the state of charge of the battery, and controls the

output to the load. The battery used in the system is a 24V lead-acid battery with 200Ah

capacity. In between the controller and the scoreboard, a power inverter is used to convert the

DC power from the battery to 120V AC required by the scoreboard. In order to expose the solar

panels to enough sunlight for this system, they must be installed behind the right field foul pole,

rather than on the scoreboard itself. This is due to blockages from trees and a building behind the

scoreboard.

The Ruben (2014) aims to make a baseball scoreboard using solar energy. And the

Researchers came up this idea to make a universal scoreboard using solar energy.

Digital Scoreboard

According to Capricho(2013) Study aimed to create a digital scoreboard for the UIC-

Annex Gymnasium. Specifically, the study sought to address the following: a) enumerate the

features of the said device . The study employed a two-phase method, experimental development

and descriptive approaches. Twenty purposively chosen evaluators composed of coaches,

players, spectators, and engineers assessed the device in terms of its functionality. Findings of

this study enumerated all the features of the digital scoreboard.

In the study of Capricho the ordinary scoreboard can be a digital scoreboard which means

the scores will be counted automatically.

Wireless Controlled Digital Scoreboard

As study by Banzuelo(2014) This study aimed to design and develop a Digital

Scoreboard using Wireless Communication. A console allows the user to control the score by

pressing the necessary button. It automatically displays the score and time on the main board and

shot clocks which is composed of big seven segments comprised of LEDs. Each system has RF

transceiver as the main component of this design that functions wirelessly. It is a small electronic

circuit used to transmit and receive radio signals on one of carrier frequencies.

The Barzuelo (2014). This study aimed to innovate a digital scoreboard with wireless

communication that will automatically display the scores and time on the main board and shot

clock by pressing the necessary button.
