CHAPTER I

CAPSTONE PROJECT BACKGROUND

Introduction

Individuals' daily lives have become increasingly reliant on modern

technology. It assists individuals and organizations with their day-to-day tasks

and routines, including transactions. Daily duties are made easier with the help

of modern technology. This technology includes equipment and information

systems that help us complete transactions more quickly and accurately.

Grading system is the process of collecting the GWA or the final grade for

the student. It determines if the student failed or passed the subject for the

QUEZON CITY UNIVERSITY

semester. It also determines the achievements for the professor to know who are

the most top students in a classroom. Grading system is composed of class

standing or a class performance and major exam.

Attendance, on the other hand, is defined as the action or state of going

regularly to or being present at a place or event. Attendance of every student is

being maintained by schools and colleges. Attendance is also a part of class

record, it is one of the professor’s tasks to monitor their students inside the

classroom. Being present is not just a mark but also it defines how students are

willing to attend their class. It also shows how diligent students are that

sometimes professors make their attendance as part of their grades.

Online Grading System is a Web based system that can be used to create

students record, class grade list and attendance monitoring report. It posts the

grade of the student online. Also, the online grading system is a system where

the professors encode students' grades via the internet. It also allows immediate

access to the records wherein the professors can easily submit the students

grades and reports process by process.

The researchers aim to develop this web-based system to upgrade the

existing process of submitting students' grades and reports. By implementing the

system, the upgraded process will be efficient, timely, convenient, and accurate.

Project Context and It’s Background

The Grades and Attendance of the students are one of the many essential

qualities of school work. Grades reflect and measure the performance of

students and determine whether a student passes the subject or not while the

attendance monitors the absence and presence of a student. It also helps the

university and professors to guide and facilitate the students' learning

development.

Quezon City University uses the manual grading system from grade

recording, computation and processing and approval. The professors have two

templates to fill out upon creating the student’s grade, the class record, which

will be their daily record keeping document and a grade sheet or template that

will be provided by the MIS once the term ends or the grades creation has

started. They also have the delinquency reports which is a separate document to

filter out all failed during the semester. Once all records templates and reports

have been accomplished, it will then be forwarded to the Faculty Admin for

cross-checking. In monitoring or recording a students’ attendance, there are

different ways on how professors do it. There are some that do it by calling each

of their names in an alphabetical order, others do it via a manual listing or

through an Excel sheet.

In order to help the professors in processing the student’s grades and

delinquency reports, the researchers came up with the idea to create a system

via online that the grade will be encoded directly in the online database by the

professors. It will also minimize the time of the professors and admin in

processing the grades of the students because they can access the records online

and will be integrated with the grade report with less error.

Developing an Online Grading System with Attendance Monitoring for

Quezon City University BSIT Students would make the task of recording and

computing the grades in general easier for the professors. This will not only

benefit the professors of the school but will also benefit the students because of

the improvement in the accuracy of calculations and in the proficiency and

productivity of all professors.

The Role of Online Grading Programs in School/Community Relations

According to Joseph T. Cameron (July 2011), this study discusses online

grading programs and their role in school/community relations. It also considers

the ramifications of a lack of continuous communication between the school, the

student, and the parents. To acquire information on the use of online grading

programs, ten grade 12 students who are currently utilizing online grading

programs were given surveys and a private international school in Bangkok,

Thailand, employs 20 teachers. According to the findings, professionally

managed online grading programs can effectively and efficiently transmit timely

information between the school and parents.

Teachers’ Perceptions of the Impact of Online Grading Systems

According to Brenda Mize (August 2011) in her research “Teachers‟

Perceptions of the Impact of Online Grading Systems”, she examined the effects

of the communication aspect of using an online grading program. Teachers'

perspectives of the consequences of making the grading process public to parents

were investigated in this study. The goal of this research was to help instructors

find new strategies to foster a positive parent-teacher relationship. The pupil

benefits from a positive and constructive parent-teacher interaction. Parents will

have access to specifics regarding their child's academic performance if grades

are made available to them on a daily basis.

Automated Grading Systems for Programming Assignments: A Literature

Review

According to Hussam Aldriye, Asma Alkhalaf and Muath Alkhalaf (Vol.

10, No. 3, 2019), the automated grading for programming assignments is

becoming more and more important nowadays especially with the emergence of

the Massive Open Online Courses. In today's educational institutions, a variety

of methodologies and systems are employed for automated grading. This article

is provided by (Hussam Aldriye, Asma Alkhalaf, Muath Alkhalaf) that literature

review of the many automated grading systems and techniques that are being

used currently. It focuses on pointing out the distinctions between these systems

and methodologies, as well as discussing challenges, benefits, and drawbacks.

According to the review, these systems have limits due to student difficulty in

using them, as several course teachers have discovered. Some of the issues were

caused by UI/UX issues, while others were caused by beginning syntax errors

and language limitations. Finally, it shows the need to fill the gap by building

new systems that are friendlier towards beginner programmers, have better

localization and easier user experience.

Taking on a New Grading System: The Interconnected Effects of Standards-

Based Grading on Teaching, Learning, Assessment, and Student Behavior

The interest in this study by the authors Knight M. and Cooper R. (2019)

arose from the first author's experiences as a 7-to-12 instructor who used various

SBG approaches. The first author has noted a constant need to learn from and

compromise with many stakeholders in her personal experiences with SBG. She

has also acknowledged the ramifications of grading reform, such as the fact that

changing grading and reporting methods necessitates a close alignment of

curriculum, instruction, and assessment; that SBG practices influence students'

learning techniques.

According to Brookhart SM, Guskey TR, Bowers AJ, et al.(2017) Grading

refers to the symbols awarded to individual pieces of student work or to

composite assessments of student performance on report cards. This review of

over 100 years of grading research looks at five types of studies: (a) early studies

of grade reliability, (b) quantitative investigations of the composition of K–12

report card grades, (c) teacher views of grades through survey and interview

research, (d) standards-based grading studies, and (e) grading in higher

education. Teachers' grades were widely regarded as untrustworthy in early

twentieth-century studies. Recent research on the relationship between grades

and measured achievement, as well as surveys of teachers' grading procedures

and views, suggest that grades assess a multidimensional construct that includes

both cognitive and noncognitive aspects that reflect what teachers value in

student work.

Despite the prevalence and intricacy of grading, there is little current

study on grading students in schools. According to Brad Olsen (2019), new ways

are being promoted by a slew of publications and experts. Many people get rid of

effort and behavior scores, get rid of the zero, switch to a four-point system, use

rubrics, or push their own software. We gathered data in two New York high

schools that were participating in a year-long professional development program

on rethinking grading to investigate changes in grading. We used institutional

theory and teacher identity as frameworks in addition to existing grading

literature to structure their research. We discovered that constructive teacher

change did occur, but it was only partial, hesitant, dependent on school-wide

support and not without teacher dissatisfaction.

This research paper by Cell Dilon (October 2018) explores the history,

ideas and relevance of grading in the globalized world and discusses if grades

are a proficient tool to measure proficiency in academic disciplines. It

investigates findings based on a simple experiment, which shows grave

differences in grading worldwide. The idea of grading was implemented in

the eighteenth century and this research explores if a system that is based on

national measurement has relevance in the globalized world. It examines the

relationship between grades teachers give and proficiency scores given to the

same students by external raters. It found little comparison between teachers’

grading system and student proficiency. That concludes that the current

grading systems are of little to no use in the general measurement of

proficiency of academic disciplines.

An Automatic Arabic Essay Grading System based on Text Similarity Algorithms

According to Abdulaziz Shehab, Mahmoud Faroun, and Magdi Rashad

(2018), manual grading has a number of drawbacks, including being time

consuming, expensive, requiring a lot of resources, requiring a lot of work, and

putting a lot of pressure on instructors. Because of these issues, the educational

world urgently requires auto-grading solutions to overcome the issues associated

with manual grading. Because they play such an important role in educational

technology, auto-grading systems are widely used across the world.

Furthermore, as compared to human grading, the auto-grading system offers

several benefits since it saves money, work, and time. Using string and corpus

algorithms individually, this study examines the different methods used in

automatic grading systems in Arabic languages. Due to the requirement of this

procedure, it is difficult work to accurately validate the replies, an all-

which is marked by difficulties in morphology, semantics, and syntax, adds to

the difficulty. The study used a variety of similarity metrics and included an

Arabic data set with 210 students' responses. The findings show that an

automatic grading system might provide an effective answer for article grading

Impact of class attendance on student performance

According to Tarig Eltoum Fadelelmoula (June 2018), the author wanted

to look into whether Respiratory Care students followed attendance rules and if

there was a link between mandatory class attendance and final test results in four

Respiratory Care courses. Throughout the course, attendance was measured by

the overall lecture attendance percent. The final exam grade was used to evaluate

the students' performance. There were no statistically significant variations in

student attendance among the courses, while attendance in cardiopulmonary

anatomy and physiology classes was lower than in the other courses. Between

the four courses, there were statistically significant disparities in performance. In

all courses combined, there was a positive association between attendance and

final exam achievement, although the relationship was not statistically

significant. The correlation between attendance and final exam outcomes for each

individual course was also investigated and found to be positive, but statistical

Importance of Online Grading System in Education

According to Mirzakhalilov S.S. and Rafikov M.Z (2018) Professors used to

write up paper report cards and send them home with kids on a regular basis for parents

to examine and sign. Today, this arrangement is mostly obsolete, having been replaced

by online evaluation systems to which students and parents have 24/7 access. The

possibility of implementing online methods for measuring knowledge in modern

education is discussed in this article. In the past, instructors wrote out paper report cards

and sent them home with students on a regular basis for parents to review and sign.

Those days are mostly gone in many areas, replaced by online grading systems that

students and parents may view at any time. The usefulness of implementing online

technologies for measuring knowledge in modern education is examined in this article.

Fractal Grading System and Its Use in the Philippines

According to Rowena A. Decena and Fe Sharon C. Tubal (January 3, 2017),

this paper proposes a new measure of “typical performance” and examines its

behavior in comparison with the traditional method of grading. The new metric

is based on the fractal statistics notion. When one of the test scores becomes

extremely low or extremely high, the values obtained by using the sample mean

will be adversely affected. This type of marking system is unfair to the student

because he gets penalized excessively for a single poor performance. Similarly, he

is overly rewarded for a single fortunate performance. To address this issue, we

try to limit the amount of "prize" a student receives for a single lucky

performance. That is, instead of giving a single high score the same weight as the

rest of the scores, we alter his award based on his consistency in class. A

simulation design using Monte Carlo methods was used in the investigation.

Outlier probability models are assumed in order to derive student scores from

these models. Results revealed that a fractal grading system rationalizes the

weights placed on examination scores as the basis for the final marks given to

students. The system bases its score on his "worst" performance and adds a

"reward" component based on his performance consistency as assessed by his

fractal dimension. The traditional grading system, on the other hand, ignores the

"reward" component and calculates students' final grades using an averaging or

smoothing technique.

Grading happiness: What grading systems tell us about cross-country wellbeing

comparisons

According to F Marquez-Padilla and J Alvarez - Economics Bulletin, (2018)

Self-reported well-being measures have been widely employed in cross-country

studies. However, there are worries regarding the sensitivity of these measures to

country-specific factors that influence how questions and scales are interpreted

without altering well-being. We discover evidence that differences in numerical

grading systems affect self-reported wellbeing using a new database on

worldwide grading systems. Countries with a higher passing grade barrier, in

particular, tend to have better levels of life satisfaction. We conclude that grading

systems alter the interpretation of scales, most likely through providing reference

points that anchor individuals' responses, because grading systems are unlikely

to affect well-being in and of themselves.

Computerized Grading System

According to Desousa (2008), Computerized Grading System have four

benefits. These are the following: 1) Compatibility. Traditional installed software,

such as web browsers, is significantly less platform-agnostic than web-based

apps. 2) Effectiveness. Unless there are no other options, everyone despises

dealing with mountains of paper. Web based solutions have the advantage of

allowing services and information to be accessed from any web enabled personal

computer (PC). 3) Live data security. Data is typically transported between

distinct systems and data sources in increasingly complicated systems. These

systems and procedures can often be combined in web-based systems,

minimizing the need to move data around. Web-based apps also increase

security by eliminating the need for the user to have access to the data and

backend servers. 4) Budget-friendly. Because of less support and maintenance,

fewer needs on the end user system, and simplified plans, web-based

applications can significantly cut expenses.

member of the grading jury evaluates the students' work independently from the

other graders using provided grading rubrics. After grading is complete,

statistical outliers are removed and the remaining scores are averaged. This

paper will describe an online grading system that was developed to form the

Online Grades Inquiry of OLPCC – San Manuel

According to J. Abella, (2017) A grading system is an important part of any

school's management system. However, such systems rarely link expectations,

outcomes, and performance. Because every student wants to get a good grade on

each assignment, exam, project, and/or report, the entire process puts a lot of

pressure on teachers to make their evaluations fair, thorough, and accurate.

These are important from the faculty's standpoint in order to avoid student and

parent dispute. More than merely a class card function, encoding of students'

personal data, and issue of summary grading sheets that include the students'

grades are available through the Online Grade Monitoring System. Because the

grades will be stored directly into a database, the system will make life easier for

those working in the registrar's office. Users in the department would be able to

get information whenever they needed it. This grading method is only for the

School's teachers, registrar's staff, and trusted staff. It is off-limits to students,

which means they do not have access to their marks prior to the issuance of their

independent relationships of socio-demographic variables, lifestyle activities,

and academic motivation with a high GPA. GPA was used as the dependent

variable, with socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, course, and weekly

allowance) as the independent variables, and lifestyle activities (smoking, alcohol

intake, number of social networking accounts, number of hours spent on social

media, level of physical activity, and level of religious activities) as the

independent variables. Of the 11 predictors examined, six had a statistically

significant relationship with a high GPA: three socio-demographic characteristics

(sex, course, and weekly allowance); two lifestyle activities (smoking and

religious activities); and academic motivation. Despite fitting the data

In the research conducted by Amora, E.N., Romero, K.V., Amoguis, R.C.,

Olandria, J.E., Olandria, E.N. and Bernales, A.M. entitled Web-Based Attendance

Monitoring System (2020). One of the problems in educational institutions is the

student’s irregular attendance. They also added that students' irregular

attendance came even worse when parents were not informed about their

children’s absences in their respective classes. It usually happens in higher

education institutions, wherein the students are far from their parents. In their

system they will be using Wireless attendance monitoring system is a system

An Electronic Grade Slip for Senior High School Students of the Nazarene

Catholic School

This study was conducted by Angela Adriana T. Arcilla, ChrisanneJocel E.

Badana, Vanessa Mae G. Castillon, Rhyzza Mica Jade Ortega, Kim Ryan P. Pido,

Joy Jasmine P. Salas, (2017) aims to investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of

having an integrated system of electronic grade slip for the Senior High school

students in the Nazarene Catholic School (NCS) located at R.Hidalgo St. Quiapo,

Manila. The researchers, who are also students at the school, discovered certain

issues that parents and students have while obtaining printed grade slips at

school during planned adviser appointments. As a result, the researchers

proposed this study to address the current problem. To collect data for the study,

a survey was constructed with questions about how the software or EGS will

help students, teachers, and parents, as well as how convenient it would be to

distribute report cards or printed grade slips electronically rather than manually.

After tallying the responses, the researchers discovered that the majority of the

Computerized Grading System for Metropolitan Academy of Manila

The Metropolitan Academy of Manila wants to develop a computerized

grading system. The work of recording and computing grades would be an

easier task for the teachers. This will not only assist the school's teachers but will

also help pupils due to an increase in the accuracy of computations as well as the

teachers' proficiency and productivity.

According to Christelle Joy Barreno, Amanda Arevalo, Anderson

Emmanuel Abundo, and Chriselle Laput (2015), the proposed system is made up

of three main modules: a registration module that collects student information, a

subject module where the teacher enters the student's rating for each grade

component, and a grade computation module that calculates the student's grade

based on the inputted ratings for each grade component. When a teacher logs in,

the main menu appears, with three options: entering student information,

entering student grades, and viewing student information. The procedure starts

with the entry of student data. This is where student information is entered and

maintained in a student information database, such as the student's name,

address, parents' names, phone numbers, and so on. The teacher selects a subject

and enters the student's rating in each grade component using data from the

student information database. The grades are saved in the database for the

subject. The grades from the subject's database are then retrieved and utilized to

calculate the student's grade.

Synthesis

The Online Grading System with Attendance Monitoring gives attention

to grade transparency which enables the students to know and get aware of their

academic performance and evaluate themselves unto what subject they are good

at.

The researchers’ study on Online Grading System with Attendance

Monitoring focuses on the monitoring and management of student’s grade and

attendance promotes transparency to give answer to the students’ doubts with

regards to their grades. The development of a system that will monitor the

students’ grades is expected to contribute to the development of the school’s

information system. Students' understanding of their grades will act as a solid

guide for them to improve their academics and get good grades. The existing

CHAPTER III

DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology used in the study, including the

requirement analysis, sampling technique, requirement documentation, design

of the software, and its process. This section also discussed the data collection

instruments and procedures employed in the study.

Methodology

In designing and developing the proposed system entitled “Online

Grading System With Attendance Monitoring For Quezon City University BSIT

Students”, quantitative methods will be used in the study.

Descriptive research methods are meant for the proponents to collect the

information about present existing conditions needed within the chosen field of

study. Descriptive research describes and interprets what’s concerned with

conditions of relationships that exist; practices that prevail; beliefs; processes

that are going on; effects that are being felt, or trends that are developing. The

method of descriptive research goes beyond mere gathering and tabulation of

the data. It involves the elements or understanding of the meaning or

lOMoARcPSD|35374148

QUEZON CITY UNIVERSITY

significance of what’s described. Thus, description is usually combined with

comparison and contrast involving measurements, classifications,

interpretation and evaluation.

Furthermore, quantitative research is used and focused on gathering the

numerical data as well as generalizing it across groups of individuals to clarify

a specific phenomenon. The objectives of quantitative research were to develop

and employ mathematical models, theories and/or hypotheses regarding

phenomena.

Requirement Analysis

The researchers discovered that the professor submits grades manually

by printing students' computed grades in a Class Record and then going to the

approval personnel office and MIS for grade encoding. This proposed method

will assist the recipients in improving their present process for sending student

grades.

Sampling technique. During the second quarter of the academic year

2021-2022, the study employed purposive sampling to include twenty-eight

(28) faculty who used the grading system and two (2) staff. The study used

descriptive data analysis with a modified standardized survey questionnaire

for assessing database interfaces. The digital software was available to QCU on

the web base, and it could be converted to Microsoft Excel. It required an

internet connection, and it was great for a large class. The data revealed that the

Online Grading System and Attendance Monitoring was generally very highly

acceptable in terms of functional stability, reliability, usability, and usefulness,

as well as highly acceptable in terms of security and confidentiality, based on

the combined evaluations of the instructor and staff. According to the opinions

of the participants, Online Grading Systems are eco-friendly, cost-effective,

user-friendly, innovative, highly quick, and legible codes.
