What is girth gear?
Basically girth gear is large gear wheel, which consist of small parts -
segments

• If it’s possible to rotate drum by


crane, now it’s time to align girth
gear

• If rotating isn’t possible, next step is


to install drive unit (gearboxes)

Girth gear alignment
• This is done by slowly rotating the gear gear and measuring
the machined surfaces of the ring with dial gauges:
• Radial runout
• The sum of the circularity and off-centre of the girth gear.
• Radial runout affects backlash.
• Axial runout
• Measuring, is the axis of the girth gear is at the same angle as
that of the drum.
• Girth gear is adjusted by screws of installation tools.
• Rotation is usually done by a crane, as the drive mechanism is
not yet installed.
• The exact position of the pinion drive is not known until the girth gear
is adjusted.
• Rotation with a pinion requires temporary welding of the
spring plates, the installation tools do not carry the torque.

Measuring axial runout

• With two dial gauges (between 180°) from


below the root circle of the tooth.
• Axial runout is the difference between the
readings of the clocks divided by two.
• The two gauges take some account of the
movements of the drum
• The two gauges also compensate for the
runouts of carrier rings.

• The position of drive unit is determined by
the girth gear
• This is determined by fitting the drive
unit in place and measuring backlash
• Adjust the height and tilt.
• Mark the positions of the foundation
screws for drilling the holes.

Grouting
• The concrete and the steel foundations cannot be directly connected to
each other.
• The elasticity of the uneven concrete surface does not compensate for the
surface pressure caused by the dynamic load of the machine.
• Under such a load, the concrete surface will crack, and the joint will slowly loosen.
• The dynamic load carrying joint is made by casting a 50-100 mm high
grouting.
• High-strength and non-shrink concrete.
• The drive unit is anchored with foundation screws.
• First fill holes of screws, then fill the space between the steel and the concrete.
• Tighten the screws when the grouting casting is fully solidified.
