COURSETILE: COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEMS COURSE CODE: OIM 114

Objective
The objective of this course is to enable students have an in-depth knowledge of Computer
operating systems. Computer operating system is a prerequisite of OIM 111. After
completing this course, the students should be able to understand the concept of operating
systems and how to solve computer operating system problems. To achieve these objectives,
the course covers both theory and Hands-On exercises.
WEEKS Description
WEEK 1 INTRODUCTION
Reviewing the concept of computer, hardware, software, components of a
computer, exploring the definition of computer operating systems and
Characteristics of computer operating systems.
WEEK2 TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
Single-User or Multi-User and Single-Task or Multi-Tasking, operating
systems: Operating systems and Task, Number of users, and number of
processor, types of computer and operating systems, operating system
mode.
WEEK 3 HISTORY OF OPERATING SYSTEM (WINDOWS OPERATING
SYSTEMS). Disk Operating system, Windows 95 and 98, Windows NT
(New Technology), Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows
Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 10. (Assignment 1)
WEEK 4 COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEMS
Hierarchies and black boxes, Processor, Memory, Cache memory, Caching,
Disk, I/O Devices and BIOS
WEEK 5 FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
Programs execution, input/output functions, file system manipulation,
errors detection, resources allocation, process handling, managing address
space, creating virtual (Test 1)
WEEK 6 COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEMS FOR LARGE COMPUTERS
Unix, Linux, Windows, functionality and area of usage
WEEK 7 WINDOWS OPERTING SYSTEMS
Definition, characteristics, Drivers and hardware requirement
WEEK 8 HANDS-ON
Introducing typical windows 10 Desktop, Start, Search and Taskbar,
opening application programs, different mouse operations. Pin programs to
Desktop or Taskbar, switching between open windows, working with files,
Creating XPS document, creating folder, deleting folder, copying and
deleting files, the Recycle Bin

WEEK 9 CUSTOMIZING YOUR WINDOWS
Resize windows, splitting windows, Windows Administrative Tools
(Defragment and Optimize Drives and the Disk Cleanup) Windows System
(Command Prompt, Control panel, File Explorer, Task Manager and This
PC.) Windows Setting (System, Applications, Cortona, Devices, Account,
Search, Phones, Times & Language, Privacy, Network & Internet, Gaming,
Update, Personalization and Ease of Access). Test 2
WEEK 10 INSTALLING AND UNINSTALLING APPLICATIONS
Add printer, installing Office suite, Printing with Windows 7 and 10,
correcting Windows problem, Trouble shooting. Copy files to USB, burn
file to CD/DVD etc.
WEEK 11 Revision: Week 1 to Week 7.

WEEK 12 Revision: Week 8 to Week 10.
