SAMPLE SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENT FOR FESEM & EDS ANALYSIS

FESEM utilizes high vacuum conditions and uses electron beam to form an
image, the sample must be as per the specifications given below:

➢ Sample should be in dry condition and it can be powder, film, pellet, coating
etc.

➢ All water/volatile contents must be removed from the sample because water
would vaporize in vacuum.

➢ Solid samples must be thoroughly cleaned / ultrasonicated to prevent any

contamination. For solid samples the dimension should not be more than
10 mm x 10 mm x 10 mm and also base of the sample should be perfectly
flat. For any other kind of special samples which are not as per the dimension
mentioned above, special permission has to be obtained from the instrument
in-charge.

➢ Electrically conductive samples do not require any preparation before being

used, however the samples must be completely dry and free from volatile
substances.

➢ Non-conductive samples need to be made conductive by coating the sample

(using sputter coater) with a thin layer of conductive material like Au/C.

➢ In case of magnetic samples, the details about the nature of the sample should
be provided to the operator before submitting the sample for FESEM analysis.

➢ Samples which are not compatible with high vacuum and samples which are
not stable for electron beam exposure cannot be analysed.

SAMPLE SUBMISSION PROCEDURE FOR FESEM & EDS ANALYSIS

➢ Samples should be submitted along with the duly filled application.

➢ Samples should be submitted in air tight vials, without any damage.

➢ For a better analysis basic details about the sample should be given.
➢ Samples received for the analysis will not be returned back. Please provide only
the required quantity of the sample for analysis (for example 200 mg of
powder).

➢ If you need the samples back after analysis, please inform us during the sample
submission itself.

Samples along with sample submission form can be submitted in person at FESEM
Lab, CIT (Room No. M146) or it can be sent to the following address
