Exam 01 – ME 312 Fluid Mechanics

December 20, 2012

Instructions:
 This is a 60 min, closed-book and notes examination.
 You are permitted to use a calculator (any type) and the property tables & charts provided by the instructor.
 There are 3 questions to be answered. Read the questions very carefully.
 Answer each question on a separate page.
Question 1: (3 points)
Clearly define the following terms:
a) Fluid b) No-slip Condition c) Streamline
d) Laminar Flow e) Eulerian Flow Description f) Newtonian Fluid

Question 2: (6 points)
For the velocity field given by
V = -K y/(x2 + y2) i + K x/(x2 + y2) j [ m/sec ]
where, K is a constant,
a) Determine whether the flow field is 3-D, 2-D or 1-D and why.
b) Determine whether the flow field is steady or unsteady, and why.
c) What are the dimensions of K in the MLt system?
d) Find an equation for the streamlines.

Question 3: (6 points)
A block of weight W and bottom surface area A slides steadily down an incline plane at speed V while lubricated
by a thin film of oil of viscosity μ. The oil film thickness is h and the incline angle is θ as shown.
a) Assuming a linear velocity distribution in the film, derive an expression for the “terminal” (zero-acceleration)
velocity V of the block as a function of the other variables (stay in variable form).
b) Find the terminal velocity of the block if the block mass is 6 kg, A = 35 cm2, θ = 15°, and the film is 1-mm-
thick SAE 30 oil at 20°C.
