1.Differentiate Complementary Medicine and Alternative Medicine

● Complementary medicine refers to something you do or take along with treatment your doctor tells you
to follow.Complementary medicine refers to treatments that are used with standard medical treatments,
like using acupuncture to help with side effects of cancer treatment.
● Alternative medicine refers to something you do or take instead of your regular treatment.Alternative
medicine refers to non-mainstream practices used instead of conventional medicine.

2. Give at least 5 examples of Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

★ Acupuncture - Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine and consists of inserting fine
needles into specific points on the skin.
★ Alexander technique- The Alexander technique is a method of rediscovering natural balance and
poise through thinking in activity. It is not an exercise regime.
★ Aromatherapy- Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant oils to bring about physiological and
emotional changes.
★ Chiropractic- Chiropractors use their hands to examine and treat problems of the bones, muscles and
joints.
★ Herbal medicine- Herbal medicine is the use of plants to treat disease and enhance general
health and wellbeing.
★ Kambo- Kambo is a poison used as a traditional medicine in purging or cleansing rituals.
★ Kinesiology - Kinesiology is a form of therapy that uses muscle monitoring (biofeedback) to
look at imbalances that may be causing disease in the body.

3. Give 10 Herbal Medications, identify its functions and contraindications.

1.Sambong- Anti-edema, Diuretic, Anti-urolithiasis


-NOTE: Sambong is not a medicine for kidney infection
2. Akapulko- Anti-fungal: Tinea Flava, Ringworm, Athlete ’s Foot and Scabies
3. Niyog-niyogan- Anti-helminth (used to expel parasitic worms.)
4. Tsaang Gubat- Diarrhea, - Stomach ache

5. Ampalaya- Lowers blood sugar levels, -Diabetes Mellitus (Mild-non insulin dependent)
6.Lagundi- Asthma and cough, -Fever, Dysentery, Colds & Pain, -Skin diseases and wounds, -Headache
7. Ulasimang Bato- Lowers uric acid (Rheumatism and Gout)
8. Bawang- For hypertension - Toothache - Lowers cholesterol levels in the blood
9. Bayabas- For washing wounds - For toothache - For diarrhea
10. Yerba Buena- For pain in different parts of the body as head ache, stomach ache - Rheumatism, arthritis
and headache - Cough and cold - Swollen gums & toothache - Menstrual and gas pain - Nausea and fainting
Insect bites & Pruritus.

Reminders on the Use of Herbal Medicine

1. Avoid the use of insecticides as these may leave poison on plants.


2. In the preparation of herbal medicine, use a clay pot and remove cover while boiling at low
heat. Use only the part of the plant being advocated.
3. Follow an accurate dose of suggested preparation.
4. Use only one kind of herbal plant for each type of symptoms or sickness.
5. Use only half the dosage prescribed for fresh parts like leaves when using dried parts.
6. Decoctions lose potency after some time.
7. Dispose of decoctions after one day.
8. To keep fresh during the day, keep lukewarm in a flask or thermos.
9. Leaves, fruits, flowers or nuts must be mature before harvesting. Less medicinal substances
are found on young parts.
10. Stop giving the herbal medication in case untoward reaction such as allergy occurs.
11. If signs and symptoms are not relieved after 2 or 3 doses of herbal medication, consult a
doctor
