Activity 1: My “Philosophy” in Life

Directions: Read the narrative below.

You are the newly elected President of the country. With the cheers and support
coming from your fellow citizens as you ascend your newly oathed office, you
were invited for an interview at the local evening talk show.

The audience gave you a warm welcome as you walk graciously toward the stage.
The host stood up and reached his hand for yours and immediately sat down.

“Good evening, Ms. President! I wish to personally congratulate you for winning
the elections!” said the host, enthusiastically.

“Ms. President, to set the course of what will happen in the country for the next
coming years under your administration I would like to ask you one question
which may be crucial to understand how you will govern the country.”

“Ms. President, what is your philosophy in life? I believe this question can also be helpful to our viewers who are
youngsters and teens who look up to you as a model and inspiration.”

You gathered your thoughts, courage, and confidence as you clear your thoughts and throat to answer the question
given to you by the host.

“Thank you for the wonderful question. My philosophy in life is:

The host was amazed at your answer, slowly nodding his head as you answer his question. The audience looks at you
with open ears as if they were touched by your answer. You knew to yourself you nailed it.

“Thank you for the wonderful answer, Ms. President. That’s all for tonight’s show, good night, everyone!”

Congratulations on being the next president of the country! It must have been a great joy to achieve something that
could not be achieved by any other person. But, anyways, I’m more interested with your philosophy/motto. Why do
you hold such a belief in life?

I asked you that because this is related to our lesson. Just as you or anyone else holds a Philosophy in life, so too our
school, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina has a philosophy in life. This is important to understand because you will
get to know the purpose why this school was built.

2
School Philosophy
Premised on Catholic principles of education and as a response to the needs of the
Philippines today, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina is oriented towards the integral
formation of the Filipino Christian woman who is critically aware, capable of deciding
freely with a properly formed conscience, responsible and committed to help build an
interdependent global society that is free, just, peaceful, and caring for the integrity of
creation. This the academy hopes to attain by fostering a school atmosphere permeated with
Benedictine values and kingdom core values of God’s centeredness, poverty, and obedience.

So much about the school’s philosophy, let’s talk more about you. I want to know more about your
future dreams and ambitions. What is it that you want to become? And what do you want to do about it
when you reached your goals? Let’s try find out through the activity below.

Well done! You’ve chosen a noble profession and I’ll be very proud if I see
you one day that you have achieved your profession. By the way, did you
notice that in the activity you just had a Vision of yourself in the future? And
in that vision, you see yourself as doing a noble task which is your Mission
as a professional? These two go hand in hand and usually they are the marks
of a successful person.

Just like your “vision” and “mission” in life, our school, St. Scholastica’s
Academy Marikina have a vision and a mission. A vision and mission is
actually important for anyone because it gives you a sense of direction and a
sense of purpose. We are not simply human beings who roam around the
earth lollygagging, we seek for fulfillment in our lives that would satisfy our
stay here on earth. Alright, let’s now talk about the 10 Hallmarks of
Benedictine Education!

X. Stability
Life of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica

Benedict was born into a distinguished family in central Italy, studied at Rome,
and early in life was drawn to monasticism. At first, he became a hermit, leaving
a depressing world—pagan armies on the march, the Church torn by schism,
people suffering from war, morality at a low ebb. He soon realized that he could
not live a hidden life in a small town any better than in a large city, so he
withdrew to a cave high in the mountains for three years. Some monks chose
Benedict as their leader for a while, but found his strictness not to their taste.
Still the shift from hermit to community life had begun for him. He had an idea
of gathering various families of monks into one “Grand Monastery” to give them
the benefit of unity, fraternity, and permanent worship in one house. Finally, he
began to build what was to become one of the most famous monasteries in the
world—Monte Cassino, commanding three narrow valleys running toward the
mountains north of Naples. The Rule that gradually developed prescribed a life
of liturgical prayer, study, manual labor, and living together in community under
a common abbot. Benedictine asceticism is known for its moderation, and
Benedictine charity has always shown concern for the people in the surrounding
countryside. In the course of the Middle Ages, all monasticism in the West was St. Benedict of Nursia
gradually brought under the Rule of St. Benedict.

Twins often share the same interests and ideas with an equal intensity.
Therefore, it is no surprise that Scholastica and her twin brother, Benedict,
established religious communities within a few miles from each other. Born in
480 of wealthy parents, Scholastica and Benedict were brought up together
until he left central Italy for Rome to continue his studies. Little is known of
Scholastica’s early life. She founded a religious community for women near
Monte Cassino at Plombariola, five miles from where her brother governed a
monastery. The twins visited each other once a year in a farmhouse because
Scholastica was not permitted inside the monastery. They spent these times
discussing spiritual matters. According to the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great,
the brother and sister spent their last day together in prayer and conversation.
Scholastica sensed her death was close at hand and she begged Benedict to stay
with her until the next day. He refused her request because he did not want to
spend a night outside the monastery, thus breaking his own Rule. Scholastica
asked God to let her brother remain and a severe thunderstorm broke out,

You’ve done a fine job looking back at your past and found out that you are already living out Benedictine
values! It’s all under our noses and we were not just entirely aware about it. We are already stewards,
humble, obedient and Christ-centered in our own little way. But, the Benedictine Hallmarks ask of us that
we reach out to the level of society. We are not just merely individuals minding each other’s own
business, we are called to become sensitive to our signs of the times and our faith tells us to help those
who are in need. For us to see how social issues and Scholastican education are related with one another,
we will move forward to our fourth and final activity.
