MODULE Lesson 8: Holy Spirit in the Life and Mission of Jesus
8

Introduction

In the Creed, we proclaim our belief in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life. We worship
the Spirit, together with the Father and the Son, as the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. As the Giver of life,
the Holy Spirit enables us to share in God’s eternal life by uniting us with Jesus Christ and the Father. Through
the Holy Spirit, we are inspired and empowered to live Christian lives and worship God authentically – in spirit
and in truth – as one Christian community.
This module aims to help us understand and appreciate the role of the Holy Spirit in our Christian lives
by (1) knowing who the Spirit is as revealed to us in Scripture; (2) learning about the Holy Spirit’s activity in
salvation history, from the beginning of time until the present; and (3) seeing how the Holy Spirit is at work in
our daily lives, constantly calling us from within to live as children of the Father and the disciples of our Lord,
Jesus Christ.

Objectives:

In this lesson, you will be able to:

Lesson 8: Holy Spirit in the Life and Mission of  Identify the fruits of the Holy Spirit;
Jesus  Compose a prayer to the Holy Spirit for its constant
presence in our lives; and

Overview
Even before Christianity reached the Philippines, our ancestors have always believed in the existence of
spirits or mystical forces that surround and affect the lives of people. While most of them believed in a Supreme
Being, whom they called Bathala, they also adhered to the spirit world of anitos and diwatas.
This belief in the spirits is still very much common in our modern society, especially in the provinces
where news of spiritual apparitions arouses excitement among people, and these mysterious occurrences are
usually attributed to the work of the spirits. Although Filipinos are generally curious about all kinds of spirits,
there is still much confusion about how they act, and little attention is given in discerning whether these spirits
are truly from God.
As Catholic Christians, however, we believe in the Holy Spirit, who is God Himself. When were
baptized as infants, the Church welcomed us into God’s family with the formula: “I baptize you in the name of

the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. As young children, we learned to make the Sign of the Cross
and offer our prayers in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Every Sunday, when we hear
Mass, we profess our faith in the Triune God, who is the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Thus, from the very
start, we have been introduced to the Person of the Holy Spirit, and indeed, our entire Christian life is filled with
its presence.
But unfortunately, for many of us, the Holy Spirit still remains the “Forgotten Person” of the Blessed
Trinity. We do not easily connect with the Spirit in the same way that we relate with Jesus Christ and God the
Father. This shows the great need for us, Catholic Christians, to get to know the Holy Spirit more and
understand its role in our daily lives, so that we may also relate with the third Person of the Trinity more
consciously and intimately.
Activity 8.1
Write at least three (3) Bible passages that speak about the Holy Spirit. Put your answer on the

The Identity of the Holy Spirit
 The Advocate

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Advocate to be with you will always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept because it
neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you” (John 14: 15-17).
In one of the Last Supper discourses, Jesus made a promise to His Apostles. He promised them that
when He finally goes back to His heavenly Father, another Advocate or “helper” will come to them and be with
them until the end of time. This Advocate is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth who will remain in His disciples
and remind them of all they have have from Christ. The Holy Spirit is also the one who will bring peace and
comfort to the followers of Christ and become their lifelong companion and guide.
However, the Holy Spirit is not an ordinary companion or guide. In the Creed, we recognize and
worship the Holy Spirit with the Father and the Son, as Lord, the Giver of Life. The life that the Holy Spirit
gives us is the very divine life of the Triune God, which is shared with us in love. St. Paul affirms this when he
says, “the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given us” (Rom
5:5).
Therefore as Christians, this is the first gift that we receive from God in Baptism, the gift of His
indwelling Spirit or Grace. God’s grace is what enables us to live as true and faithful Christians. Hence, when
we think of the Holy Spirit, we must not imagine someone distant or far away from us. In reality, the Holy
Spirit is the closest encounter we have of God, for in the Holy Spirit, we experience God-within-us.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit
In the Bible, we will find numerous records of the symbols of the Holy Spirit. These are given in order
to teach important truths about the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. The purpose of these symbolisms are
shed to light, add understanding, and illustrate truths about the Holy Spirit. If you notice, it is very easy to
understand the truths about God the Father and God the Son. It is because as human, we can relate easily to a
father and to a son but never or seldom to spirits. And so, in order to fully understand our knowledge about the
Holy Spirit, we will study the different symbols of the Spirit of God.

Fire

Fire is one of the popular representations of the Holy Spirit. During

Exodus, the Israelites were led by a pillar of fire at night. It gives them the
light and the heat they need during the cold, dark nights in the desert. The
symbol of fire also appeared on the day of the Pentecost when tongues of
fire appeared on the head of the Apostles. Fire symbolizes the strength and
force of the Holy Spirit. As fire refines and changes material from one form
to another, thus, the Spirit purifies and changes the heart of the people He
touches. The Holy Spirit purifies, warms, and illuminates our mind, heart and soul.

Cloud
Cloud is also used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. As the
Israelites wander in the desert, the pillar of cloud did not leave
them. Instead, its presence continued to lead them as a people and
protected them from the scorching heat of the sun. The image of
cloud represents the image of light which symbolizes the hidden
and mysterious characteristic of God who eventually reveals
Himself to His people.

Dove
Another popular symbol of the Holy Spirit is a dove. In the Old
Testament, we will find in the story of the great flood that Noah sent a dove
to check if there is an available dry land. At first, the dove returned to the
ark because there is no sign of dry land yet. But on the second time, the dove
returned with an olive leaf showing sign that there is life once more on earth.
In the New Testament, a dove appeared and descended on Jesus
during His baptism in the Jordan River. “As soon as He was baptized, Jesus
came up from the water. At once, the heavens opened and He saw the Spirit
of God come down like a dove and rest upon him” (Mt. 2:16).
The Spirit of God is an Informer of the truth. Like a dove, the Holy Spirit brings to us the truth in a
gentle and peaceful manner. It provides us with the most and purest truth of the Good News.

Oil
In the olden times, anointing with oil is used to signify the
bestowal of authority and power through the spirit for a certain person
to act in various capacities. Likewise, oil is used as an instrument to
heal the sick. In the Church, we regard oil as a symbol of the Holy Spirit
for it is through the Spirit that God graces His people to act in certain
capacity. It is through the Spirit that He heals and mends the wounds of
the heart of His people.
Oil is also used to keep the lamps burning in the temples and
other holy places. Like the lamp, the oil in our hearts should not run dry
and should be kept burning. Here, we will discover that we need the
presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the Church because it is
the Spirit who enlightens and
illuminates the darkness that
surrounds us. The Spirit heals us and gives us the power to overcome
temptations.

Wind

The wind is a symbol to recognize the Holy Spirit. In Hebrew and Greek, the word “spirit” is
translated as “ruah” and “pneuma” which can be referred to wind or breath. In the book of Genesis, we will
find that the Spirit is the wind and breath that gives life to the earth and to man.
In the beginning, when God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth had no form and was
void; darkness was over the deep and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters (Gen. 1:1-2).
Then Yahweh God formed Man, dust drawn from the clay, and breathed into his nostrils a breath of life
and Man became alive with breath (Gen. 2:7).

It is also the same wind that rushed and filled the room where the Apostles were gathered on the day of
Pentecost and all of them are filled with the Holy Spirit (cf Acts 4:1-4). It is the spirit that breaths life to
mankind and into the Church and the same Spirit will eventually raise all mankind into new life in Christ.
Water
Water signifies birth and life. It denotes the cleansing and life-giving
action of the Third Person of the Trinity at Baptism. In the Gospel of John, Jesus
also told His disciples that the Spirit is the “Living Water” flowing from His
innermost being and the source of eternal life. The Psalmist wrote that a person
who does what is good is “like a tree beside a river producing its fruit in due
season, its leaves never withering. Everything he does is a success” (Ps. 1:3).
Hence, the Holy Spirit gives life to our parched soul. The Spirit refreshes us
whenever our soul is weary and tired. God pours to us the Living Water that gives
eternal life.

The Holy Spirit in Salvation History
Since the beginning of time, the Holy Spirit has been actively present in the world, renewing the face of
the earth and bringing salvation to humankind.
 In Creation
 “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland,, and
darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters” (Gn 1:1-2). In the story of
creation, the Holy Spirit is symbolized by the “mighty wind” sweeping over the waters, bringing life and
putting order into the world.
 “The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life,
and so man became a living being” (Gn 2:7). Within all creation, it is in the human person that the Holy
Spirit is especially active. Created in God’s image and likeness, the first human persons came to life
when God blew into their nostrils the Holy Spirit or the “breath of life” (CFC 1286).

 In God’s Covenant Relationship with Israel

 “Your good Spirit you bestowed on them, to give them understanding; your manna you did not withhold
from their mouths, and gave them water in their thirst” (Neh 9:20). This passage recalls how God
bestowed upon His chosen people, Israel, His very own Spirit to guide and sustain them as they
wandered in the desert toward the Promised Land.
 “I will give you a new heart and place a new Spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony
hearts… I will put my Spirit within you and make you live by my statutes careful to observe my
decrees” (Ez 36:26-27). God has always been faithful to His covenant with Israel. Yet, many times, the
Israelites turned away from God and worshipped idols. So, God promised to send the Holy Spirit in their
hearts that they may remember that He is the Lord and remain faithful to Him.

 In the Life and Ministry of Christ

 “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore,
the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God” (Lk 1:35). It was through the power of the Holy
Spirit that salvation was brought to mankind through Mary’s birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has
sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed to go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Lk 4:18-19). Jesus inaugurated His public ministry
through the power of the Holy Spirit as the prophet Isaiah foretold in the Old Testament (CFC 1294).
 “When Jesus had taken the wine, He said, ‘It is finished’ and bowing His head He handed over the
Spirit” (Jn 19:30). The Holy Spirit was present with Christ all throughout His earthly life, from His
birth, baptism, public ministry, to His suffering and death.
 “Jesus said to them, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you’. And when He had
said this, He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (Jn 20: 21-22).

The Spirit’s power is seen most clearly in the Resurrection. The Risen Christ sends His Spirit to His Apostles so
that they may receive new life and faithfully continue His mission.
 In the Church
 “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit
enabled them to proclaim” (Acts 2:4). At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave the Apostles the courage to
proclaim the Word of God to all people. This event paved way for the birth of the Church. At present,
the Holy Spirit continues to empower and guide all the members of the Church in fulfilling their mission
from Christ and building the Father’s kingdom on earth.

Activity 8.3
Write True if the statement is correct and False if otherwise, on the space provided before each
number.

___________1. It was through the power of the Holy Spirit that salvation was brought to mankind through
Mary’s birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
___________2. The dead Christ sends His Spirit to His Apostles so that they may receive new life and
faithfully continue His mission.
___________3. Within all the creation, it is in the human person that the Holy Spirit is especially active.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Christian Life
1. The Holy Spirit unites with Christ and the Father. As the Spirit of God sent into our hearts, we become united
with Christ and the Father through the Holy Spirit. In fact, before we could begin to know Jesus Christ and the
Father through the Holy Spirit. In fact, before we could begin to know Jesus Christ and the Father, we must first
be touched by the Holy Spirit, “for no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (Cor 12:3). It is the
Holy Spirit which reveals Jesus Christ to us as the visible image of the Father.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of adoption” by which we become children of God. For “God
sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, but
through Him and His Spirit we are adopted by the Father, and become children of God, who are called to share
in His Divine life and love (CFC 1310).
2. The Holy Spirit enables us to live true Christian lives. The Holy Spirit enables us to live authentic Christian
lives by:
a. directing us to the truth of God in Jesus Christ;
b. empowering us to love one another as Christ loved us; and
c. deepening our communion with Christ in prayer.
 It directs us to the truth. As Christians, the center of our lives is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
However, it is through the Holy Spirit that the Risen Christ becomes present in us. It is the Spirit of
Truth who teaches us who Jesus Christ truly is and who we are in relation to Him. Through the Holy
Spirit, we recognize Christ as our Truth, the true light that renews and enlightens our lives.
 It empowers us to love. We are empowered to love as Christ did because of His Grace, the Spirit of
Love within our hearts. Through the Spirit, we are strengthened to overcome temptations, choose the
good, and fulfil our mission from Christ. We are able to turn away from our selfish ways and bear
witness to Christ’s love. Without love we are nothing. “Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us
and His love is brought to perfection in us” (1 Jn 4:12).
 It inspires our prayer life. The Holy Spirit also deepens our relationship with Christ by inspiring our
prayer life. The more we commune with Christ in prayer, the more we learn to respond to His call and
live in accordance to the will of our Heavenly Father. To make this possible, we must cooperate with
God’s Grace and choose to live by the Spirit.
3. The Holy Spirit draws us to the Christian community, the Church. As the Spirit of the Risen Christ, the Holy
Spirit is the one who draws each member of the Christian community into the Body of Christ, the Church. This
union of the Church through Christ in the Spirit is shown in her teachings, in fellowship, in the breaking of
bread and prayer, and in our loving service of one another (CFC 1314).

Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit gives us gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear
of the Lord. Each gift helps us live a holy Christian life. Wisdom is the desire for the things of God. It perfects
charity because it directs our whole life and actions to honor God and love our neighbors. Understanding gives
us an awareness and intuitive discernment of the truth. It enables us to see clearly the mysteries of faith.
Knowledge perfects the virtue of hope and it enables us to discover the will of God in all things. The gift of
counsel sharpens prudence and it warns us of the deceits of evil. These four (4) gifts refer to intellectual
virtues.
The other three (3) gifts refer to the virtues of will. The gift of piety enables us to love God and obey
Him. Fortitude is having the strength to face danger, temptations, and difficulties. Lastly, the fear of God is
opposed to being afraid of God but instead, it refers to loving all that is good and fear of offending God because
God is the source of all goodness.
According to St. Paul,” the Spirit produces fruits in the hearts of men when the Spirit is present in them.
These fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness (meekness), self-control
(self-discipline); against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23). The fruits of the Holy Spirit are the
products of the Spirit which are all good, right, and truth.
