Part A: Quick Answer – marks
Read each question carefully. Please ensure that you fill in your final answers in the
boxes provided at the right side of the page. Each correct answer is worth 1 mark.

A1. Let V = v1 + v2 and dim(V ) = 3, dim(V1 ) = 2 and dim(V2 ) = 2. What is the

dim(V1 ∩ V2 )?

A2. Let T ∈ L(V, W ), where V and W are both finite vector spaces. True or False,
if we can show that T is onto, then T is invertable.

A3. Let T (x1 , x2 ) = (x2 , x1 ). Let α1 = (1, 5). If β = {e2 , e1 }, what is [T α1 ]β ?

A4. Let V be the vector space of real polynomials of degree at most n. Let T be
the integration operator, which is defined below. Provide a counter example to show
that T ∈/ L(V ).

A5. Let V be a vector space. True or False, a basis always exists for V .

A6. What is the geometric representation of T (x1 , x2 ) = (x2 , x1 )?

A7. If T is a linear functional, what can the rank(T ) be?

A8. Let V1 and V2 be a subspace of V . True or False, if all the basis vectors of V1
are each linearly independent to the set V2 , then V1 + V2 is a direct sum.

A9. Is f (x) = sin(x) a linear transformation over the real numbers?

A10. Let (Z15 , +, ×) be a ring with the normal addition and multiplication operators.
Is the additive subgroup {0, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12} principal idea? Why or why not?
Part B: Long Answer
Please write your answer in the space provided. Show your work, as this will make
up an important part of your mark.

B1. Determine if the following transformations T : R2 → R2 are linear.
