A surprising fact I learned in this presentation is that local insects and animals play an important

role in the success of sustainable green roofs. I never really thought about how these roofs still
need access to local pollinators and species that interact with the plants located there. These
creatures can help to pollinate plants, disperse seeds, and provide natural pest control. They
can also help to create a more diverse and balanced ecosystem on the roof. It is important to
take into account the needs of local insects and animals when designing a green roof. For
example, providing nesting sites for birds or creating habitats for beneficial insects such as
ladybugs can help to ensure that these creatures are able to thrive on the roof. Additionally,
selecting native plants that are adapted to local conditions can help to attract beneficial insects
and animals while also providing food sources for them. By taking into account the needs of
local insects and animals, sustainable green roofs can become more successful in providing a
healthy environment for both people and nature.

In my opinion from this lecture, I think one of the most important factors in creating a successful
and sustainable roof is taking into account root depth and irrigation. some information about the
different root depth levels needed for different plants located on green roofs include that some
plants require very shallow root depths, while others require much deeper root depths. For
example, sedums and succulents are two of the most popular green roof plants and they only
need a shallow root depth of 2-3 inches. On the other hand, grasses and shrubs require much
deeper root depths of up to 12 inches or more. Additionally, some plants may need even deeper
root depths depending on their size and growth habits. It is important to research the specific
plant species before planting it on a green roof in order to ensure that it has enough space for
its roots to grow properly.
