Course Objectives and Academic/Learning Goals:

¾ To provide the students with exposure to the Geotechnical nature


of Environmental problems.

¾ To impart knowledge in the selection of sites for waste disposal


using current methodologies.

¾ To understand transport phenomena in saturated and partially


saturated porous media of the contaminant.

¾ To obtain knowledge on ground modification techniques in waste


remedial measures for contaminated zones.

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

9 Demonstrate the application of principles of Geotechnical


engineering to design of waste disposal facilities.

9 Familiarize the use of different linear materials for protecting


the ground and groundwater from leachate.

9 Expose the various ways of soil contamination and


their effect on soil properties.

9 Disseminate methods of redemption of soil contamination.

Course Material:

material will be posted in the course page (University website).

‰ The documents will be posted in electronic version (pdf format).

‰ A number of articles will be posted for the course during the


semester. These articles have technical and/or historical
significance to the current state of practice. You are expected to
read these articles critically.

Attendance:

™ Students are expected to attend all class periods and participate


in the discussion.

™ Since the course material will provide only the theoretical


understanding, the lectures are clearly the main source of
information to understand the practical applications which will
be helpful to do the assignments and exams.

(i) Quiz

• There will be three quizzes during the semester.

• Each quiz will be conducted for 10 marks and the


weightage will be 5%.

(ii) Midterm Assessment

¾ There will be two midterm tests which will be scheduled during


the August 2014 & September 2014 (Exact date and time will
be announced later) and will be conducted for 30 marks and
the weightage will be 15%.

Note:
Students who miss a midterm exam will receive zero mark
for that exam. Exceptions to this rule will be made only on
a carefully considered basis, and only if the student
contacts me before the exam

(iii) Assignment

¾ An assignment has to be done by the student individually.

¾ The assignment topics along with last date for submission will be
uploaded in the course page and each student is expected to
select the topic of his/her interest and communicate the same
to the faculty. The topics will be assigned to the students on first
come first basis. If the selected topic is already chosen by
another student, then one has to select another topic.

¾ Generally, the assignment topics will be on soil contamination,


transport phenomenon

The assignment has to be submitted as a report and the report should:

• Introduce the topic and briefly state the purpose of your work
• Describe the data, and other information on relevant topic.
• Critical review of literature available in the given topic.
• Refer to any y attached drawings,
g p plots, and other figures

identify the significant information they contain.
• Summarize important outcomes of your assignment.

¾ There will one assignment in this course.


Assignment will be evaluated for 20 marks and the weightage
will be 10%.

The report and presentation after the submission date
will NOT be considered for evaluation.

(iv) Term-end Exam

‰ There will be a term-end exam for the course as per the


schedule on slot basis provided by the COE office.

‰ The TEE will be conducted for 100 marks and the weightage
will be 45%.
