If you could see Earth from outer space, it would look mostly blue.

The Earth’s bodies of water may be classified as freshwater or

saltwater.

their definition and examples.
• You able to know the importance of
bodies of water to living things.
1. River

A river is a course of freshwater that usually

flows form a mountain to a larger body of
water, such as lake, sea, or ocean.

Examples of rivers in the Philippines are:

• Cagayan River
• Angat River
• Pampanga River
• Pasig River which is also known as Ilog
Pasig which connects Laguna de Bay to
Manila Bay.
2. Lake
A lake is a large body of water that is
surrounded by land. Lakes are usually made up
of freshwater. Some lakes are formed by
building dams across rivers.

• Laguna Lake
• Lake Buhi

An ocean is a large body of saltwater.

More than 70 percent of the Earth’s
surface is covered by ocean waters.

Five oceans on Earth:

1. Atlantic
2. Pacific
3. Arctic
4. Indian
5. Southern/Antartic ocean
Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean and is
located east of the Philippines.
4. Sea

A sea is a large body of salt water that

is attached to an ocean. It is smaller
than an ocean.

Examples of seas in the Philippines are:

1. South China Sea
2. Philippine Sea
3. Celebes Sea
5. Waterfall

A waterfall is a body of water that falls from a higher ground to

a much lower ground to create or give rise to a river or a lake in
the process.
The waterfall erodes the bedrock and creates the channel through
which the water flows to become a river.

Examples of waterfalls in the Philippines

are:
1. Pagsanjan Falls in Laguna
2. Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan City
6. Stream

A stream is a body of water that branches from a river.

It is a shallow and may be found by the roadside or flowinf
through fields.
Example of stream is the Tandawan Stream located in Davao.
7. Gulf and Bay

A gulf and a bay are both parts of a sea or an ocean that extend into land.
A gulf has a narrow entrance along a strait while the bay has a wider opening.
Thus, gulf is more enclosed by land than a bay.
Manila Bay is well-known bay in the Philippines. Ragay Gulf is located in Camarines Sur.
