SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Main Engine onboard simulated ship is a crosshead engine of two-stroke
type (Fig.1.). The engine is equipped with scavenging ports and exhaust
valve. Fuel injection pump is operated mechanically by means of
camshaft. Fuel injection pump is of helix type (Fig. 2.) with two control
levers; one for fuel index (Fig. 2a) and another for VIT index adjustment
(Fig 2b). Fuel index lever is designed to control (adjust) amount of fuel to
be injected into cylinder while VIT level control injection point –
beginning of injection. Both levers are control by engine pneumatic
system by means of pneumatic cylinders. During more excessive
movement in case one of the control lever stuck it will cause deviations in
exhaust gas temperature, significant changes in injection timing and
differences in injected fuel quantity between cylinders.

ABBREVATIONS ER: Engine Room

ECR: Engine Control Room
ME: Main Engine
VIT: Variable Injection Timing

SYSTEM OPERATING AND ALARM Exhaust gas temperature after each cylinder: 350 – 380 ˚C (Alarm 400 ˚C)
PARAMETERS Exhaust gas temeperature deviations between cylinders +/- 50 ˚C.
Exhaust gas temperature after each cylinder (Slowdown): 450 ˚C

ALARM TYPE When High exhaust gad temeprature is reached an alarm will be on ECR
computer panel followed by alarm/light in signal column. If problem is not
solved on time the ME slowdown function will be activated. Following
alarms and changes will be triggered:
- You will hear heavy sound in ER (beyond sound of running M/E)
- Signal light column for machinery alarm is illuminated
- Message on ECR computer panel will appear: “CYLINDER No. 4
EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE DEVIATIONS”
- Local Temperature gauge at Cylinder No. 4 show 270˚C while
temperature gauges on other cylinders shows 320 ˚C.
PLANT CONDITION BEFORE TO Vessel has just departed port and Main Engine is incerasing power/speed.
START SCENARIO Present engine speed is 55 rev/min. One auxiliry engine (generator) is in
operation.
Exhaust gas temeprature at cylinder outlet is 320˚C.
Following indication is shown before scenario:
- No any sound alarm in ER – SILENCE (only machinery noise and ME
increasing sound as increase speed)
- Signal light column for machinery alarm is NOT illuminated
- NO Messages on ECR computer panel
- Temperature gauge at each Cylinder Temeprature Guage is 320˚C.

SCENARIO Scenario chronology:

1. Heavy Alarm sound and Signal light column for machinery
alarm is illuminated (Fig.7.)
2. Message on ECR computer panel will appear: : “CYLINDER No.
4 EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE DEVIATIONS” in red letters
(Fig. 4. and Fig. 5.)
3. Local Temperature gauge at Cylinder No. 4 show 270˚C (Fig.8.)
4. Student will have to press ACKNOWLEDGE BUTTON in ECR
computer panel (Fig.6)
5. The alarm horn will SILENT and light on signal column will go
OFF (Fig.7.)
6. The letters on message on ECR computer panel “CYLINDER No.
4 EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE DEVIATIONS”” will change
color to yellow (Fig.5.)
7. Student will phisically have to go to the fuel injection pump no
4 and inspect fuel pump index position and compare it to the
adjecent cylinder (found difference Cyl.4. – 20, Cyl. 5. – 25)
(Fig. 3.)
8. Student will have to manually push fuel rack on cylinder no. 4
(Fig. 3.)
9. Fuel rack position on cylinder injection pump no 4 will move to
25. (Fig. 3.)
10. Local Temperature gauge at Cylinder No. 4 will slowly reach
320˚C (Fig.8.)
11. Message on ECR computer panel will appear: : “CYLINDER No.
4 EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE DEVIATIONS” will dissapear
(Fig. 4. and Fig. 5.)
