SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Main Engine onboard simulated ship is a crosshead engine of two-stroke
type (Fig.1.). The engine is equipped with two mains LO pumps that
supply main engine with lubricating oil. The pumps are vertical driven
centrifugal pumps that supply lubricating oil into main engine. Main LO
pumps are located at the top of main engine sump tank aft end near
engine flywheel. (Fig.2.). Engine sump tank is the tank that collect all
lubricating oil contained in ME. Engine sump tank is part of ship hull and
is located bellow main engine. Aft part of engine sump tank is extended
below ME flywheel in order that vertical centrifugal pumps can be
located on tank top. Engine sump tank is equipped with sounding pipe
that is used for manual measuring tank level (lubricating oil content).
Low oil content might cause that lubricating pumps cannot supply
enough oil pressure to engine.

ABBREVATIONS ER: Engine Room

ECR: Engine Control Room
ME: Main Engine
LO: Lubricating Oil
LL: Low Level
TK: Tank

SYSTEM OPERATING AND ALARM ME LO pressure: 3,0 bar (Alarm: 1,5 bar, Shutdown; <1,0 bar)
PARAMETERS ME LO level in sump tank: 0,80 mtr, (Alarm LL 0,65 mtr)

ALARM TYPE When LL alarm in engine room sump is reached an alarm will be on ECR
computer panel followed by alarm/light in signal column. If problem is not
solved on time an additional alarm will be triggered ME Low Oıl pressure
and consequently an ME Shutdown function will be activated. Following
alarms and changes will be triggered:
- You will hear heavy sound in ER (beyond sound of running M/E)
- Signal light column for machinery alarm is illuminated
- Message on ECR computer panel will appear: “ME SUMP TANK LL”
If problem is not solved within 5 min sec following alarms and changes will
be triggered:
- You will hear heavy sound in ER and machinery alarm light is
illuminated (if privously not acknowladged and silenced)
- Message on ECR computer panel will appear: “ME OIL PRESSURE
LOW – 1,5 bar” and “ME STAND-BY LO PUMP CHANGE-OVER”
- Local Pressure gauge at ECR control Panel will show 1,5 bar
If problem is not solved within 5 min following alarms and changes will be
triggered:
- Message on ECR computer panel will appear: “ME SHUTDOWN”
- Alarm lamp No. 02 – Main Lube. Oil Low Pressure on SSU unit on
ECR Panel is illuminated/blinking

PLANT CONDITION BEFORE TO Vessel is undreway at full main engine speed and one auxiliry engine
START SCENARIO (generator) is in operation. Present engine speed is 85 rev/min. One
auxiliry engine (generator) is in operation. ME LO Pressure is 3,0 bar.
Following indication is shown before scenario:
- No any sound alarm in ER – SILENCE (only machinery noise and ME
increasing sound)
- Signal light column for machinery alarm is NOT illuminated
- NO Messages on ECR computer panel
- ME LO pressure at ECR Gauge Panel is 3,0 bar.

SCENARIO Scenario chronology:

1. Heavy Alarm sound and Signal light column for machinery
alarm is illuminated (Fig.8.)
2. Message on ECR computer panel will appear: “ME SUMP TK
LL” (Fig. 4. and Fig. 5.)
3. Local Oil Pressure gauge on ECR Gauge Panel will show 3,0 bar
(Fig.3.)
4. Student will have to press ACKNOWLEDGE BUTTON in ECR
computer panel (Fig.6)
5. The alarm horn will SILENT and light on signal column will go
OFF (Fig.8.)
6. The letters on message on ECR computer panel “ME SUMP TK
LL” will change color to yellow (Fig.5.)
From this point the time frame of approx. 5 min should be given to the
student correct problem (fill up oil into Main Engine) by means of:
7. Student will physically have to go to the LO Storage tank in ER
and open the valve for oil filling valve and LO Storage outlet
valve (Fig.9.)
8. Student will physically have to go to the ME LO Sump TK
sounding pipe and perform manual sounding (Fig. 11.).
9. When level in tank will start to reise above 0,65 mtr the letters
on message on ECR computer panel “ME SUMP TK LL” will
dissepear (Fig.5.)
10. When level in tank will raise until 0,8 mtr the student will
physically have to go to the LO Storage tank in ER and close
the valve for oil filling valve and LO Storage outlet valve
(Fig.9.)
11. The letters on message on ECR computer panel “ME SUMP TK
LL” will dissepear (Fig.5.)
12. Local Oil Pressure gauge on ECR Gauge Panel will show 3,0 bar
(Fig.3.)
FINISHED SCENARIO OR in case student did not conduct steps 7-10(12)
following actions will be triggered:
13. Heavy Alarm sound and Signal light column for machinery
alarm is illuminated (Fig.8.)
14. Message on ECR computer panel will appear: “ME LO
PRESSURE LOW – 1,5 bar” and “ME LO PUMP STAND-BY
START” (Fig. 4. and Fig. 5.)
15. Student will have to press ACKNOWLEDGE BUTTON in ECR
computer panel (Fig.6)
16. The alarm horn will SILENT and light on signal column will go
OFF (Fig.8.)
17. The letters on message on ECR computer panel ““ME LO
PRESSURE LOW – 1,5 bar” and “ME LO PUMP STAND-BY
START” will change color to yellow (Fig.5.)
18. Local Oil Pressure gauge on ECR Gauge Panel will show 1,5 bar
(Fig.3.) and slowly continue to drop down towards 1,0 bar (e.g.
0,1 bar/minute)
In case student does not perform actions in steps 7 – 10(12) after 5 minutes
the step 18 will take place:
19. Heavy Alarm sound and Signal light column for machinery
alarm is illuminated (Fig.8.)
20. Message on ECR computer panel will appear: ““MAIN ENGINE
SHUTDOWN” (Fig.4. and Fig.5.) in red color
21. Alarm lamp No. – Alarm lamp No. 02 – Main Lube. Oil Low
Pressure on SSU unit on ECR Panel is illuminated/blinking
(Fig.7.)
22. Local Pressure gauge at ECR control Panel will show 1,0 bar
(Fig. 3.)
23. ME Revolution gauge will start decline and sound of ME will
start to decline (dropping down from 85 towards 0 in green
area) (Fig. 10.)
24. Student will have to press ACKNOWLEDGE BUTTON in ECR
computer panel (Fig.6)
25. The letters on message on ECR computer panel ““MAIN
ENGINE SHUTDOWN” will change color to yellow (Fig.5.)
26. The alarm horn will SILENT and light on signal column will go
OFF (Fig.8.)
Student will have to perform step 7.-10(12).
