Situational Analysis: A student-researcher is conducting a
study about the grammatical competence of Grade 12
learners. Which of the following questions is/are appropriate
for this objective?
1) The writer of the poem entitled “The Raven” is
__________.

2) Don’t run __________ the classroom.

3) Mahabharata is the longest __________.

4) We could barely get any information at the airport.

__________ people seemed to have __________ idea
about the flights.
VALIDITY

▪ denotes the extent to which an instrument is

measuring what it is supposed to measure

▪ truthfulness of a measure
CONTENT VALIDITY

▪ the appropriateness of the content of an instrument

▪ whether the individual item/question of the tool

represents what it really intends to assess or measure
How do we validate?

Re-presentation
Crafting/ Validation By
Modification (Heavy
Reviewing Experts
Corrections)
at least three
How do we select the validators?

▪ expertise
▪ educational qualifications
▪ position
Do we still need to validate a research
tool directly lifted from testing centers and
previous studies?
BRAINSTORMING!

How will your evaluators

validate your interview guide?
Validation Form
Directions: Please rate the validity of the questions/items based on the given indicators. Use the given scale
below:
5 – Very High 3 – Moderate 1 – Not Valid
4 – High 2 – Low

Indicators 5 4 3 2 1
1. The data gathering tool is neatly prepared.
2. The questions agree with the overall objectives/thrust of the study.
3. The questions are arranged and organized.
4. The questions are clear and do not warrant misconceptions.
5. The items are written based on the participants’ understanding.
6. The items are free from any grammatical and syntactical errors.
7. Generally, the instrument measures what it intends to measure.
Validity Level
Statistical Range Descriptive Equivalent Rating
4.21 – 5.00 Very High
3.41 – 4.20 High
2.61 – 3.40 Moderate
1.81 – 2.60 Low
1.00 – 1.80 Not Valid
Hands-on
Activity
Ysabelle, a student-researcher developed an interview guide for her study. This
tool was evaluated by three raters and the result is shown below. Compute the validity
rating and interpret.

Calculating Level of Acceptability Using MS Excel

Statistical DER
Range
4.21 – 5.00 Very High
3.41 – 4.20 High
2.61 – 3.40 Moderate
1.81 – 2.60 Low
1.00 – 1.80 Not Valid

Sample Interpretation:
The computed validity rating is 4.33 interpreted as very high
validity. This means that the interview guide can serve its purpose.
It further implies that the tool measures what it is supposed to
measure.
SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS:

Suppose you have already identified your

validators and have prepared the acceptability
form and tool; can you proceed already with the
validation? Why or why not? What is that one
essential thing that you need also to prepare?
What are the principles in letter writing that
you need to observe?

completeness

conciseness

What other things should you consider in

writing a request letter?
Validity of the Interview Questions

To ensure the validity of the interview guide, it will be

presented to three validators composed of one language
teacher, one research teacher and one expert in the field of
civil engineering. These validators will check the content of
the interview guide and its alignment with the research
objectives. Further, the suggestions and corrections that will
be made by the evaluators will be incorporated in the final
copy of the interview guide.
Exercises:
Being wordy is a good practice in
writing request letters.
Validators are selected based on their
expertise and qualifications.
The validity of a research instrument
pertains to its truthfulness.
A research tool with a validity rating
of 4.28 means it did not meet the
criteria or standards.
A research tool is valid if it serves the
purpose for which it is intended for.
