Misalignment of the top slice beam can cause fiber orientation and dry weight
profile variation. Common reasons for top slice misalignment are backlash in the
transfer gears and clearance in the slide joints.

Duration of full service 48–72 Valmet can replace the entire top slice movement
hours mechanism. The service includes:

Performed during shutdown hours • Disassembly of the top slice beam and vertical
movement gears and transfer screws
Performed during operation – • Replacement of the vertical movement gears and
the transfer screws
• Disassembly of the top slice pivot
• Replacement or reconditioning of the top slice pivot
• Testing of the vertical and horizontal movements,
and alignment of the top slice beam with the apron,
horizontally and vertically
