SHEET 2

1. Answer the following:

(a) Describe water content test?
(b) Describe Sieve analysis test?
(c) Define Atterberg limits?
(d) Define Liquid limit, Plastic limit and Shrinkage limit?

2. Results of particle size distribution analysis of a soil sample weighing

115.50 gm are given. Draw the grading curve. Find uniformity coefficient
and the percentage of different components.
Sieve size
10 6.0 2.0 1.0 0.6 0.3 0.15 0.063
(mm)
Weight
0 5.5 25.7 23.1 22 17.3 12.7 6.9
retained (gm)

3. A sieve analysis test was carried out on two soil samples A and B, the
results are as follows:
Sieve size
38 19 10 4.8 2.4 0.4 0.2 0.075
(mm)
% pass (A) 100 96 87 78 61 22 12 9
% pass (B) 100 100 100 90 80 42 40 0
For both, draw the grading curves, determine the uniformity coefficient and
coefficient of curvature, Find the percentage of different components.

4. The liquid and plastic limits of a soil are 68 and 25, respectively.
Determine the plasticity index. If the natural water content is 40.67 %, find
the consistency and liquidity indices.

5. Classify the following soils according to M.I.T and Triangular

classification:
% Gravel Sand Silt Clay
Soil A --- 30 30 40
Soil B --- 60 30 10
Soil C 20 40 30 10
