Question 1.
The results of a sieve analysis of a soil are given below. 2013 fall semester
IS sieve 4.75 mm 2mm 1 425 μ 212 μ 150 μ 75 μ
Mass of soil 10 165 100 85 40 30 20
retained (gm)
Draw the particle size distribution curve and hence determine the uniformity coefficient and the coefficient
of curvature. Classify the soil according to the USCS.

Question 2.
500g of dry soil was used for a sieve analysis. The masses of soil retained on each sieve are given below:

a. Liquid limit, plastic limit and flow index
b. Classify the soil as per the USCS and ISCS
c. Liquidity index if the natural water content of the soil is 28.9% old question

Question 4.
The sieve analysis of a soil gave the following results
% passing 75 micron sieve =4
% passing on 4.75 mm sieve = 45
Coefficient of curvature = 1
Coefficient of uniformity = 5.5
Classify the soil according to USCS and ISCS.

Classify the soil according USCS and ISCS.

Question 6.
The mechanical analysis of a sample of a soil gave the following information
Sand =30%
Silt =30%
Clay =40%
Classify the soil as per the Textural Classification System.

Question 7.
Classify the soils A and B with the properties as shown below, according to USCS system.
Soil WL IP % passing No 4 % passing No
sieve 200 sieve
A 45 29 100 59
B 55 15 100 85

Question 8.
The following data refers to a silty clay that has assumed to be saturated in the undisturbed condition. On
the basis of these data determine the liquidity index, sensitivity, and void ratio of the saturated soil.
Classify the soil according to the USCS systems. Assume Gs = 2.7.
