the contractor) and Oromia Water and Energy Bureau (the employer), and West
Wollega Water and Energy Office (the consultant); to implement drilling and associated
works of a borehole (well) in Oromia Regional State, West Wollega Zone, Haru
District, Chonge PA. The well is designated by a code as CHB1. The contractual target
depth was 150m whereas the actual drilled depth 71m and effective depth is 71m.

1.2 Location & Accessibility

The borehole site (project area) is located in Oromia Regional State, West Wollega
Zone, Haru District, Chonge PA. Geographically (UTM, ADINDAN, Zone 37), it is
situated at 812227m (x, Easting), 988387m (y, Northing) and elevation 1907m (z) of m
above mean sea level.

The site can be accessed by travelling 441 kilometres from Addis Ababa (Finfinne) to
Gimbi on an asphalt road and travelling further for about 30 kilometres from Gimbi
town Jitu Town on dry weather road and then the site is 15km from Jitu Town to site.

1.3 Local Geology & Hydrogeology

1.3.1 Local Geology and Hydrogeology
Geologically, the project site and its vicinity are comprised of metamorphic rocks. As far as
hydrogeology is concerned, the area looks feasible morphologically as well as geologically. As
can be observed from the drilled lithological strata there is well weathered and fractured Schist
and Gneiss that is highly weathered and fractured to be potential water bearing formation in the
area.

4.2 Principle
If we pump water from a well & measure the discharge of the well and the resulting
drawdown in the well, we can substitute these measurements in to an appropriate well
flow equation and can calculate the hydraulic characteristic of the aquifer.

The pumped water is disposed 12m away from the well mouth so as not to circulate
back to the well and to keep the surrounding area clean. During the pumping period, the
change in water level against time was recorded using pumping test data sheet.

4.3 Objective
 To know the aquifer performance, potential and sustainable discharge of the well.
 To estimate the well efficiency or the variation of well performance with the discharge
rate
 To measure the aquifer parameter (Hydraulic conductivity (k), Transmissivity(T), Safe
yield(sy), and Storativity(S) if possible)
 To select the appropriate pump type and position
 To obtain information about the groundwater quality of the well

- Observation pipes (G.S.P), Size (ø) =3/4 inch; length=6m,

- Crane for mantling or dismantling of pump and pipes,
- Ruler to measure water level in the V-Notch
- Pump position= 67m.

4.6 Pumping Tests

Pumping tests are commonly conducted: to estimate the well efficiency or the variation
of well performance with the discharge rate; to determine the hydraulic characteristics
of the aquifer such as hydraulic conductivity permeability (K), Transmissivity (T), safe
yield (Sy) and storage coefficient storativity (S) i.e. to know the aquifer performance in
general. Its principle is measuring the discharge of the well and the resulting drawdown
in the well through observation pipes at a specific time, and calculating the hydraulic
characteristics of the well. This is executed by using the measurements into appropriate
well flow equations.

4.7 Provisional Test

The preliminary test was conducted for 1 (one) hour with full pipe discharge. During
this time the water level has dropped from 0 m to 18.05m and a drawdown of 18.05m
was recorded. Recovery observation was no done; the data of drawdown is annexed as a
part of report.

4.8 Constant Discharge Test.

The constant discharge rate test was carried out on 29/07/2015 with a constant discharge
of 5 l/sec. and was completed on 30/07/2015 after 24 hours of constant pumping
without interruption. At the beginning of constant discharge test, the measured water
level was 0 m and the maximum draw down (TDD) measured for the range of the
pumping time is 20.00m and the dynamic water level after 24 hrs of constant pumping
at Q=5 1/s is 20m from the measuring point, top of the permanent casing The
transmissivity of the aquifer as calculated (measured) with Jacob’s method is, T=
2.47E+5 m2/d.

4.9 Recovery Test

Recovery test is an obligatory and finalizing part of every aquifer pumping test as it
cross checks the accuracy of the constant test analysis. It is the mirror image of the
constant test. It was also measured just after the pump shut-off and within 1hrs
duration, the well recovered 100% of the total drawdown (TDD). This test was analyzed
with Theis’s recovery under confined aquifer and the transmissivity of the aquifer is
(see the annex)

5 Analysis of Pumping & Recovery Tests

The necessary field data have been annexed as part of this report. Graphical
presentation of constant discharge test and recovery tests are shown in fig.3 and
fig.4 using quietest software respectively. Thus, analysis of the data will follow
accordingly.

5.1 Hydraulic Parameters (T, K & S)

The results of analyses of the constant discharge rate & recovery tests have been
presented in table 6 below.
Table 6: Analysis result of constant discharge test.

i. Constant discharge test Method

1 Transmissivity (T) (m2/day) 2.47E -1
2 Hydraulic Conductivity (K) (m/sec) 4.94E -3
ii Recovery Test
1 Transmissivity (T) (m2/day) 1.1E+0
2 Hydraulic Conductivity (K) (m/sec) 2.2E-2

a) Specific Capacity (Sc)

Sc= Q/Sw, where Q = pumping rate =5 l/sec
Sw = total draw down in the well = 20 m
Sc= Q (l/sec)/Sw(m) =5/20= 0.25 l/sec/m
Thus, 15 l/min can be pumped per one meter of drawdown (water level fall) from the
well

b) Safe yield (Sy)

This will be calculated considering factors, which affect the available water column,
such as seasonal water fluctuation, Pump and screen efficiency, well development
inaccuracies and aquifer productivity through time.

Seasonal water fluctuation will have positive effect on the available water column. The
screens are considered to be fully slotted and are not in a position to clog the free
entrance of water. The pump is assumed to be 100% efficient for simplicity in this case
at 67m.

Well development inaccuracies and aquifer productivity through time are included in
the safety factor, which is considered to be 70%.

Sy= Sc x ha x Safety factor (70%), where Sc= Specific Capacity

ha= available head, which in this case considered as the aquifer length of the well (the
length from the static water level to the possible pump position –that is the current depth
established during pumping test = 67m, in this case the permanent pump is assumed to
be at 87m from the ground or measuring level). The main objective here is to protect
water level fall or over pumping below this aquifer’s upper boundary, i.e. not to
jeopardize the geological setting of the area over longer period. Therefore, ha = 67m
(available head).

Sy=0.25 l/s/m x 67m x 0.7 = 11.7 l/s which is above the pumping rate considered during
the conducted pumping test. Thus, the well can yield min. 5 l/s which the constant test
was conducted with.

c) Maximum Yield
The maximum yield of a well can be estimated from a specific capacity using available
water column. ha= available head, which in this case considered as the total available
water column.

Thus, available water column= 77.98m (The pump position considered to be 6m from
the bottom of the well)

Accordingly, Max. Yield = Specific capacity x available water column

=0.25 l/sec/m *67m
= 16.75 l/sec
Hence, these results can minimize risk of jeopardizing both the hydro-geological and
geological setting of the area and prevent over pumping of the aquifers.

8 Conclusion and Recommendation

The main aquifer tapped by the well is highly fractured and weathered Schist and
Gneiss. The aquifer is fully penetrated and the well was drilled to 71meter depth.

Morphological, Lithological as well as hydro geological simulation between the areas

confirm that the drilled site is feasible for ground water exploitation. The main aquifer
in the area is weathered and fractured Schist and Gneiss. The whole construction
works i.e. the drilling, installation of casing and well development had been
performed. The screen production casings were set against aquifer portion of the well.

The well gives 5 lit/sec. at 67m pump position.
