1. There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.

2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E. All the sections

are compulsory.

3. Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of two marks each, Section

C contains five questions of three marks each, section D contains three long questions of five marks each and

Section E contains two case study based questions of 4 marks each.

4. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B, C, D and E. You have to
attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

22. Draw a circuit diagram for p-n junction diode in forward bias. Sketch the voltage-current graph for the same. [2]
23. Is it possible to create an electric field in which all the lines of force are parallel lines and whose density [2]
increases gradually in a direction perpendicular to the lines of force, as shown in Fig.?

The graph [Fig.(a)] shows the variation of voltage V across the plates of two capacitors A and B versus increase of
charge Q stored on them. Which of the capacitors has higher capacitance? Give reason for your answer.

lines belong.
27. In Young's double slit experiment, monochromatic light of wavelength 630 nm illuminates the pair of slits and [3]
produces an interference pattern in which two consecutive bright fringes are separated by 8.1 mm. Another
source of monochromatic light produces the interference pattern in which the two consecutive bright fringes are
separated by 7.2 mm. Find the wavelength of light from the second source. What is the effect on the interference
fringes, when the monochromatic source is replaced by a source of white light?
28. Write Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Express it mathematically. A conducting rod of length l, with [3]
one end pivoted, is rotated with a uniform angular speed of ω in a vertical plane, normal to a uniform magnetic
field B. Deduce an expression for the emf induced in this rod.

Figure shows a rectangular conducting loop PQRS in which arm RS of length I is movable. The loop is kept in a
uniform magnetic field B directed downward perpendicular to the plane of the loop. The arm RS is moved with a

Deduce an expression for

ii. the external force required to move the arm and

29. i. Name the e.m. waves which are used for the treatment of certain forms of cancer. Write their frequency [3]
range.
ii. Thin ozone layer on top of the stratosphere is crucial for human survival. Why?
iii. An e.m. wave exerts pressure on the surface on which it is incident. Justify.

Mrs. Rajlakshmi had a sudden fall and was thereafter unable to stand straight. She was in great pain. Her daughter
Rita took her to the doctor. The doctor took a photograph of Mrs. Rajlakshmi's bones and found that she had suffered
a fracture.
He advised her to rest and take the required treatment.
i. Name the electromagnetic radiation used to take the photograph of the bones.
ii. How is this radiation produced?
iii. Mention the range of the wavelength of this electromagnetic radiation.
30. Two identical bar magnets P and Q are placed in two identical uniform magnetic fields as shown in figure. [3]
Justify that both the magnets are in equilibrium. Which one of these is in stable equilibrium? Give reasons for
your answer.

31. Two-point charges +q and -q are placed distance d apart. What are the points at which the resultant electric field [5]
is parallel to the line joining the two charges?

a. State Coulomb's law of force in electrostatics. What are its limitations? Define one coulomb of charge using this
law.

b. Two equal positive charges, each of 5μC interact with a third positive charge of 10μC situated as shown in Fig.

Find the magnitude and direction of the force experienced by the charge of 10μC .

32. i. Derive the mathematical relation between refractive indices μ and μ of two radii and radius of curvature R [5]

for refraction at a convex spherical surface. Consider the object to be a point source lying on the principal
axis in rarer medium of refractive index μ and a real image formed in the denser medium of refractive index

μ2 . Hence, derive lens maker's formula.


ii. Light from a point source in air falls on a convex spherical glass surface of refractive index 1.5 and radius of
curvature 20 cm. The distance of light source from the glass surface is 100 cm. At what position is the image
formed?

a. When a ray of light passes through a triangular glass prism, find out the relation for the total deviation, δ in terms
of the angle of incidence, i and angle of emergence, e.
b. Plot a graph showing the variation of angle of deviation with the angle of incidence and obtain the condition for
the angle of minimum deviation.

33. i. Deduce the relation between current I flowing through a conductor and drift velocity vd of the electrons. [5]

ii. Figure shows a plot of current I flowing through the cross-section of a wire versus the time t. Use the plot to
find the charge flowing in 10 through the wire.

Section E
34. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [4]
When a rectangular loop PQRS of sides a and b carrying current I is placed in uniform magnetic field B

of loop are equal, opposite and collinear, thereby perfectly cancel each other, whereas forces on the arms PQ and
RS of loop are equal and opposite but not collinear, so they give rise to torque on the loop.

Force on side PQ or RS of loop is F = IbB sin 90o = IbB and perpendicular distance between two non-collinear
forces is r1 = a sin θ

i.e., normal to the plane of loop.
(i) A circular loop of area 1 cm2, carrying a current of 10 A is placed in a magnetic field of 0.1 T
perpendicular to the plane of the loop. Calculate the torque acting on the loop due to the magnetic field.

(ii) Write the relation between magnetic moment and angular velocity of the coil.

(iii) A current loop is lying in a magnetic field, what are conditions for it to be in stable and unstable
equilibrium?

How does the magnetic moment of a current I carrying circular coil of radius r and number of turns N
varies with radius of the coil?

35. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [4]
A transformer is essentially an a.c. device. It cannot work on d.c. It changes alternating voltages or currents. It
does not affect the frequency of a.c. It is based on the phenomenon of mutual induction. A transformer
essentially consists of two coils of insulated copper wire having a different number of turns and wound on the
same soft iron core.
The number of turns in the primary and secondary coils of an ideal transformer are 2000 and 50 respectively.
The primary coil is connected to the main supply of 120 V and secondary coil is connected to a bulb of
resistance 0.6 Ω .
(i) What will be the value of voltage across the secondary coil?
(ii) Find the value of the current in the bulb.
(iii) What will be the value of current in the primary coil?

Calculate the power in primary coil.
