WHAT IS

NANOTECHNOLOGY ?
Is a very promising field of scientific activity that continues
to inspire and propel our scientists to explore its vast
application in our society. This field of study has been
revolutionizing our society and will continue to do so as
nanotechnologists prove the flexibility and durability of
nanoparticles in various applications.

Unique Features
Of Nanoscale
1. Scale at which biology occurs
2. Scale at which quantum effects
dominate properties of materials.
3. Scale at which surfaces and
interfaces play a large role in materials
properties and interactions
1. Scale at which
biology occurs
Various activities of the cell take
place at the nanoscale. The
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) serves
as the genetic material of the cell
and is only about 2 nanometers in
diameter. The hemoglobin that
transport oxygen to the tissues
throughout the body is 5.5
nanometers in diameter.
A good number of modern
researches focus on advancing
procedures, therapies, tools, and
treatments that are more
accurate and custom- made that
traditional methods and cause no
adverse effects on the body.
2. Scale at which
quantum effects
dominate
properties of
materials.
Particles with dimensions of 1-100 nanometers have
properties that are significantly discrete from
particles of bigger dimensions. Quantum effects
direct the behavior and properties of particles in this
size scale. The properties of materials are highly
dependent on their side. Among the essential
properties of nanoscale that change as a functions of
size include chemical reactivity, fluorescence,
magnetic permeability, melting point, and electrical
conductivity.
3. Scale at which
surfaces and
interfaces play a
large role in
materials
properties and
interactions
As we increase the surface per mass of a
particular material, a greater amount of
the material comes in contact with another
material and can affect its reactivity .
Nanotechnology in the
Philippines
Nanotechnology involves
engineering of functional system
at the atomic or molecular level.
It can create many new
materials and devices with wide-
ranging application such as
medicine, energy, agriculture,
food production space science
and electronics among others.
There are currently few Filipino
experts working on
nanotechnology development
who successfully integrated it in
biotechnology and materials
science. There is anees for more
expert and willing scientist who
will contribute in the expansion
of this emerging field of science.
DOST whittled down it's priority
projects to ICT and
semiconductors, agriculture and
food, energy, medicine, and
environment due to the modest
research and development fund.
ELECTRONICS
Projects that are being worked
out under the program include
ICT and semiconductors that
ongoing research and
development on GaAs nanorods,
CNTs, and quantum dots, tiny
crystals used in the production of
medical sensor and solar cells.
AGRICULTURE
An agriculture, nanotechnology
can be applied on chemical
sensors and biosensors for
precision agriculture.
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles
(MSNs) are also utilized to
deliver DNA to animal and plant
cells in order to facilitate gene
transformation and expressions.
FOOD
PROCESSING
Several promising ventures are being
done include edible coats for
agriculture and food export,
regulated atmosphere storage for
prepared commodities, and
biodegradable food packaging with
barrier properties and enhanced
strength. Standards setting for food,
beverage, and nutraceuticals, self-
healing food packaging films, and
controlled release formulations for
food, food additives, flavors, and
nutraceuticals are also among the
priorities.
ENERGY
Solar energy devices that use
nanostructures are being
pursued through collaborative
approach by research groups
from the University of the
Philippines, Ateneo of the Manila
university and so on.. These
devices focused on solid state-
based and dye sensitized-based
solar cells
MEDICINE
Nanomedicine is expected to soar in billions
of dollars as an industry globally.
Nanomedicine -related researches are
envisioned in the next three to 10 years
including the development of ex vivo and in
vitro diagnostic and imaging protocols.
Nanotechnology programs in the country
are also gearing toward development and
deployment of miniature optical and
chemical diagnostic kits into field extension
of diagnostic research against alarming
disease such as sexually transmitted
diseases, leprosy, filariasis and other
reemerging infections.
ENVIRONMENT
Scientist would like to work on
water purification by nanofilter,
environmental remediation and
development of green
composites including forest
product. Nanoparticles are
explored to remove pollutants
and toxic products that present
in soil or water.
