TECHNOVATION 2023-2024
To Abate And Employ,
Plastic & SWW
● On July 28, 2023, the world hit a
milestone known as plastic overshoot
day, which indicates that we generated
more plastics than we could handle,
resulting in 43% of plastic trash not
being adequately managed due to a
Understanding shortage of recycling and
waste-management choices.
The Problem ● If this trend continues, by 2050, there
may be more plastics in the water than
fish, with an estimated 22000 kg of
plastic entering the ocean per minute.
Plastic decomposition takes 450+
years.
Taking Trash to Task: A dumpyard in the
Nilgiris hills transforms into a waste
management park

Beware, plastic could be in everything

you eat.
By times of India
● To address this issue we came up with a
solution involving, converting of plastics
into activated carbon through pyrolysis,
a chemical process that breaks down
organic molecules into simpler
compounds. This activated carbon can be
Understanding used to filter saline waste water (SWW),
which can be any industrial effluent.
The Solution
● This method not only reduces the cost of
filtering water but also allows less
profitable factories to adapt and reuse
filtered water, reducing the usage of
ground water and the side effects of
contaminated SWW.

THEROY USED
● The breakdown of materials into simpler compounds during pyrolysis
involves thermal decomposition, where the molecular structure of plastics
is altered.
● The process of treating saline waste water (SWW) involves understanding
the flow and behavior of fluids, a fundamental aspect of fluid dynamics.
● We use High-temperature processes for pyrolysis involve principles of
thermodynamics, considering the energy transformations and reactions
occurring during the decomposition of plastics.
