Fourth engineer interview question


1. Tell me something about yourself and your experience with
rank 4th Engineer?
My name is Nguyen Duc Hoa, I’m 25 years old, I’m married (single). My
nationalities is Vietnamese, I have been work as rank 4th Engineer
position about 1 year, 2 ship with foreign crews. The first I had
promotion and work as 4th engineer in 3 months and after I had a fully
contract with rank 4th engineer.
2. Why do you transfer to our company?
I heard that your company is big one, professional environment, new
fleets and good salary, also I want to get a new chance for challenger.
3. What do you expect when you work for our company?
I hope that we have a good cooperation in the future, just like that
because I know your company is good one. I also want to do my best
here.
4. Why you left your previous company?
I want just looking for a new working environment to develop myself and
also wana change my quality life.
5. Have you been work with foreign crews? What nationality?
How did you think when you work with foreign crews ? How do
you think about them?

Yes I have many times work with foreign crews, including European,
Filipino, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian…etc
When I worked with them in a long time before, I leant from them many
things for example good skills, awaness of job and professional attitude
in working and life, and I think I can get good integration with them.
6. Tell me what machineries and equipment you are in charge
with rank 4th Engineer?
As a 4th Engineer, I will in charge of engines and equipment follow the
SMS and Policy of Company for example Boiler, Purifier, Main Air
Compressor, Fresh Water Generator, Incinerator, Sewage Treatment
Plant, Engine Life Boat, all pumps in the engine room, Lub oil, hydraulic
oil and greases consumption and Fresh water and Sea Water system
also.
7. Have you been work in UMS Vessel? Tell me what means of
UMS,PMS and what did you do with them?
Yes I have been work in UMS Vessel, UMS means of Unmanned
Machinery Space, PMS means of Planned Maintenance System, when the
vessel in mode of UMS, I must be observe strictly follow company policy
about UMS, do the UMS Checklist correctly and be carefully.
8. What is SOLAS, MARPOL, ISPS, SOPEP, SMS, STCW?
SOLAS is Safety of Life At sea 1974, Marpol is The International
Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, ISPS is
International Ship and Port Facility Security, SOPEP is Shipboard Oil

Pollution Emergency Plan, SMS is Safety Management System, STCW is
Standard of Training and Certificates of Watchkeeping.
9. Tell me what do you know about Marpol and what you need to
be attention when you are engineer?
Marpol is very important to all vessels in the world, It’s means of The
International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. It’s a
convention from 1973 and applied for all the vessels in the world. Marpol
including 6 annexes. As an engineer, I have responsibilities follow and
ensure that do with all annexes correctly. Specially is annex 1, 4 ,5 ,6

10. Tell me some special areas you know?

Special areas including North of America, North of Europe, Red sea, Black
Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Panama Canal,
North seas of China, Mediterranean Sea.

11. Do you have experience working when the vessel on dry


dock&

Yes, I had 3 time for working when the vessel on dry dock. Before she
goes to dry dock, we need to make the overhaul planning. The chief
engineer will discuss with company SI and make the schedule for each
machinery as engineer in charge. We conduct to do this and observe all
work from ship yard worker.

12. Did you enter SECA Line, what means of SECA when and

where, what means of SECA and what do you need to notice to


entering, inner and exiting SECA Line?
Yes I entered SECA Line in 3 last vessels in 2017 and 2018, SECA is Sulfur
Emission Control Area. We will change over from HSFO to LSMGO and
completed before we enter SECA, also we will change over from LSMGO
to HSFO after we exit from SECA, follow Marpol annex 6, In SECA, We use
LSMGO with content of Sulfur not exceed 0.1% with Main Engine,
Auxiliary Engine and Boiler.
10. Tell me what content of Sulfur in HSFO and LSMGO?
Content of Sulfur in HSFO is less than 3.5% and in LSMGO is less than
0.1%.

11. What type of your last vessel, Main Engine, Auxiliary Engine,
Boiler, Main Air Compressor, Purifier, Fresh Water Generator,
Sewage Treatment Plant?

In my last vessel. Main Engine is MAN B&W 6S50ME – C8.2, Auxiliary


Engine is Daihatsu 6DE-18 with 3 sets, Boiler is Vertical boiler Osaka with
Smoke Tube Economizer Boiler, Main Air Compressor is Sanwa 3S30AB,
Purifier is Selfjector Mitsubishi 25H, Fresh Water Generator is Sasakura
KM-15, Sewage Treatment Plant is Sasakura SD-3RN.

12. How do you overhaul your main air compressor and purifier

when you are 4th Engineer?

When I was a 4th Engineer. When overhaul Main air Compressor and
Purifier, I always follow PMS, before do this I always make a plan and
report to CE and 2E about that, then I will prepare fully spare parts for
this job. Then I will read carefully the instruction manual and do this one
by one, step by step quite be carefully. After all I will make a report for
company.
13. What do you need to be attention with boiler, main air

compressor and purifier?


For the boiler I need to monitor the boiler water, the steam in good order
as instruction book. I need to carry out testing the boiler water every 3
days and record all the result for report.
For the main air compressor I need to check all the parameter when it
running as pressure of air compress, water cooling temperature….
For the purifier I need to maintain in good order and always check the
feed rate, temperature, over flow condition for keep the fuel usually in
good condition.

14. How often do you test alarms and safety protections of an


incinerator?
Answer:
 Once a week.
 I remark and sign my name on the test record.

15. Please tell me some alarms and protections of an
incinerator!
Answer:
 Miss fire (shutdown)
 Low oil pressure (shutdown)
 Compressed air low pressure (shutdown)
 Exhaust gas high temperature (shutdown)
 Furnace high temperature (shutdown)
 Low temperature of Sludge oil (shutdown)
 Low vacuum pressure of furnace (shutdown)
 Abnormal cooling fan (shutdown)

16. What do Port State Control Officers normally check for


incinerator?
Answer:
 They check that the furnace temperature of the incinerator is able
to raise up to 650 Celsius within five minutes and working
temperature in the combustion chamber under normal service is
not lower than 7500C.
 They check some alarms and protections of incinerator.
 Kinds of garbage for burning.
 They may ask for incinerator ashes.

17. What will you do if the boiler water level is too low?
Answer:
 I will stop the boiler immediately and at the same time I inform the
chief engineer about it.

 The main reasons are commonly seen as the following cases:
cascade tank is out of water, the boiler water supply system is out
of order (boiler feed water pump is damaged, boiler feed water
control system is out of order), broken steam pipe, wrong
indication...

18. How can you check low low water level shutdown function of a
boiler?
Answer:
 I can check the function of “low low water level shutdown” via a
protection pot fitted with a water level sensing unit.
 I close all isolation valves and open the drain valve of the pot. After
draining out water, the boiler will be shut down and alarm will be
given.

19. How often do you test boiler water?


Answer:
 I test boiler water daily as per maker’s instruction.

20. Which tests do you conduct with boiler water?


Answer:
 I conduct the following tests: PH test, P-Alkality test, Chlorine test.
 PH from 9.5 to 11 with boiler water and from 8.3-9.0 with
condensated water.
 P-Alkality from 100 ppm to 200 ppm.
 Chlorine concentration is as low as possible and not exceed 100
ppm.

21. What will you do if chlorine content is high?

 If I find down that chlorine content is high, I will test chlorine content of condensated
water in cascade tank and make-up water too.
 The main problem is that sea water is leaking from the condenser.
 I will have to inform the chief engineer about it and stop the boiler after at first
opportunity. After that I will open up the condenser and carry out pressure test with
soap so as to find down the broken tube.
 I will plug the broken tube by means of copper plugs and carry out pressure test
again.

22. Could you tell me some alarms and safety protections of the
boiler!
Answer:
 Miss fire (shut down)
 Miss ignition (shut down)
 Low water level (alarm)
 Low low water level (shut down)
 High water level (alarm)
 Low temperature of fuel oil (shut down)
 Low pressure of fuel oil (shut down)
 Low steam pressure (alarm)
 High steam pressure (alarm)
 Forced draft fan abnormal (shut down)
 Furnace pressure abnormal (shut down)

23. How do you test miss fire?


Answer:
 I start up the boiler and wait untill the boiler is working under
normal condition.
 I take out the flame eye and cover it by my hand.

 After few seconds, the boiler is shut down and alarm is given by
sound signal and light signal.

24. What parameters should you pay attention to during


operation of a fresh water generator?
Answer:
 I should monitor: vacuum, boiling temperature, difference
temperature between sea water inlet and outlet, produced water
output, salinity content.
 Vacuum is from -0.85 bar to -0.95 bar.
 Boiling temperature is from 450C to 500C.
 Supplement chemical in correct dosage (15-30 ml per 01 ton of
production)

25. What will you do when 2nd Engineer and 3rd Engineer
pump out Bilge water without passing OWS?
Stop to them and report to CE and Master.
26. What will you do when you operate Incinerator, when can
you burn waste oil and oily rags?
When I operate incinerator I need to ask permission and position of the
ship. When ship sailing and outside ECA, distance from nearest land we
can burn waste oil is 12 knot.
27. Tell me how do you choose correct gravity disc for you
purifier, what do you base on?

You need to know the information of specific gravity treated oil at 15 ˚C,
treating temperature and feed rate. After that we use monogram
instruction given so we can find the correct gravity disc.
28. Tell me what will you do if bunkering sample analysis
results with new density for HSFO?
We need to choose the right gravity disc for purifier, choose the right
temperature for new HSFO and also monitor the sludge of the fuel oil.
We need to monitor the viscosity and temperature for service oil.
29. Tell me what will you do before, during and after
bunkering?
Before we bunkering we need to sounding all storage tanks and make
tank sounding table. We make the bunkering plan and all paper we
needed as bunkering check list, safety meeting, bunkering plan… nearly
bunkering we need to stop all transfer pump. Prepare SOPEP material for
prevent oil pollution.
During bunkering we need to monitor the tank inlet valve, sounding the
tanks and watching the pressure, temperature, take the oil sample
prevent the Capuchino.
After bunkering we need to final sounding, matching the BDN and
quantity we received, report if short cut, prepare the oil sample for
analysis and IMO.
30. If your purifier’s current suddenly become high
abnormality, what do you think and will you do?

I will shut off inlet valve and stop the purifier ASAP. I think maybe the
bow inside so dirty and so many slug or the friction clutch maybe broken
or stuck up, maybe the ball bearing unbalance. Maybe the ball bearing
damage, the vertical shaft unbalance and the rotation to be changed.
31. If your purifier happening overflow and make alarm, what
do you think and what will you do?
I do: I must shut off the inlet valve, blow down and check the reason why
it happened.
I think I must find the way purifier over flow. There are two way can
overflow
- Sludge outlet side: bow cannot fully close, pilot valves damage, main
sealing damage, the close water not enough or lost.
- Liquid outlet side: not enough sealing water, wrong gravity disc,
temperature low, revolution not reach to operate rpm.
32. If you purifiers are running in good condition, suddenly
happen abnormality sound, what do you think and what will
you do?
I think some part have problem and I will stop the purifier quickly, check
by hand and open the cover for checking, maybe the friction clutch, boss
or bearing and gear have problem.
33. Same above question with your Main Air Compressor?

I think some think can inside the combustion chamber, some part
damage… need to stop and check every parts.
34. Tell me all reports you are in charge with rank 4th Engineer
in your last vessel?
Chemical inventory, Lub oil inventory, seep, EEOI, Boiler water testing,
Ozone depleting other report as instruction of company.
35. Tell me what often do you maintain and safety check for
your Rescue boat and Life boat engine?
I need to maintain and check the fuel oil level, cooling jacket, lub oil level.
Check the condition of batteries recharge and check the start and wheel
condition.
36. Tell me what will you do when you operate your Fresh
Water Generator?
I will check all the pipe line and the valves, pump of the systems.
Maintain the temperature, pressure and quality, quantity of fresh water.
37. Pls tell me why the salinity alarm and tell me your method
for resolve them?
The salinity alarm because the fresh water collect still have salt, it is not
real fresh water. We need to adjust the by - pass valve, also adjust the
temperature inside the chamber, adjust the seawater inlet for heating
and evaporate.
38. What things do you need to check daily with all pumps?

I need to check the suction and discharge pressure, check the leaking
condition, check the electrical parts. Check any abnormal as vibration,
noise…
39. Tell me what job you carry out with Sewage Treatment
Plant, when possible you can discharge sewage to overboard
and where? What condition? Tell me what do you know about
Gray tank? Is there gray tank on your last vessel? When you use
gray tank and what purpose of gray tank?
For sewage I need to cleaning after service, add chemical during service.
Maintain the pump and the air ejector, grease up all bearing.
We possible can discharge if the ship outside of ECA, SECA, other special
area, ship continuous sailing and distance from nearest land is 12 knot.
The grey tank we can check by diagram and also the pipe line system,
when the ship inside the special area, the service water from galley, pop
deck… cannot discharge and it will be collect to the grey water.
40. Tell me some troubles on your last vessel with machineries
and equipment and how to solve them?
The air compressor run service long time because the piston-ring worn
out.
The air condition has freeze around compressor because ship sailing in
cold place….

42. Tell me how do you test quality of Boiler water and Cooling
water?
I carry out testing boiler and cooling water a time per 3 days. The
contents need to check chloride, akality, PH, Oxy, Phosphate.
