responses. While I do not want to make
light of anyone who has experienced
catastrophic events, it is important to
recognize that capacity in the moment
of painful experiences can also impact
the definition of trauma to the
individual.

The Brain and Trauma: When trauma


is experienced, the brain reacts by
activating its defense mechanisms.
The amygdala goes into overdrive,
sending out signals of danger, while
areas responsible for rational
thought, mainly the prefrontal

protective measure, over time, can
become a fixed response pattern,
making individuals hyper-reactive
to even minor triggers.
Emotional Scars: Just as a physical
wound leaves a scar, emotional
traumas etch deep impressions on

worth, our trust in others, and our
ability to connect. Unresolved, they
can manifest as anxiety, depression,
or other emotional disturbances.
