Hyaluronic acid :
Heparin:
i. It is an anticoagulant widely used when taking blood in vitro for clinical studies. It is also used
in vivo in suspected thromboembolic conditions to prevent intravascular coagulation. It activates
antithrombin III, which in turn inactivates thrombin, factor X and factor IX.
iii. It contains repeating units of sulphated glucosamine → alpha-1, 4-L-iduronic acid → and so
on.
Chondroitin Sulfate
Keratan Sulfate
It is the only GAG, which does not contain any uronic acid The repeating units are galactose and
N-acetyl glucosamine in beta linkage. It is found in cornea and tendons.
Dermatan Sulfate
It contains L-iduronic acid and N-acetyl galactosamine in beta-1, 3 linkages. It is found in skin,
blood vessels and heart valves.
Sucrose contains glucose and fructose. Sucrose is not a reducing sugar; and it will not form
osazone. This is because the linkage involves first carbon of glucose and second carbon of
fructose, and free reducing groups are not available.
D-glucose is otherwise called Dextrose, a term often used in bed-side medicine, e.g. dextrose
drip. Dextrin is the partially digested product of starch. Dextran is high molecular weight
carbohydrate, synthesized by bacteria.
5)What glycosides? what is the aglycon component in cardiac glycosides? give examples of any
two glycosides of medicinal value.
Glycosides
a. When the hemiacetal group (hydroxyl group of the anomeric carbon) of a monosaccharide is
condensed
with an alcohol or phenol group, it is called a glycoside The non-carbohydrate group is called
aglycone.
b. Some glycosides of medical importance are given in Table 6.3.[PG:70 DMV] Digitonin is a
cardiac stimulant. Phlorhizin is used to produce renal damage in experimental animals.
6)what are epimers and anomers? Give example for each.
Epimers
are carbohydrates that differ in the location of the -OH group in one location. Both D-glucose
and D-galactose are the best examples.
Anomers
are stereoisomers of cyclic sugars that differ in configuration only at the hemiacetal or hemiketal
carbon. Ex- α-D-Glucopyranose and β-D-glucopyranose are anomers.
