The use of
input devices
What is an input device ?

Input devices are devices that help users to

send data to the computer or issue commands
to the computer.

The widely used input devices are the

keyboard, mouse, microphone, scanner,
digital camera, and webcam.

MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Definitions
Manual input devices
Manual input devices are input devices that are used
by people to enter or sent data into a computer by
hand.
Automatic input devices
Automatic input device is an input device that allows
data to be sent into the computer with no or little
human interaction.
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICES

Differences
Manual Input Device Automatic Input Device
HUMAN It requires human direct It collects data without
INVOLVEMENT actions such as typing on continuous human involvement
a keyboard etc. such as voice recognition etc.
SPEED AND It is very slow and less It is quick and more efficient.
EFFICIENCY consistent.
USES Mostly used for tasks Often used in applications to
such as text entry. capture data that are used
continuously.
COMPLEXITY Simpler design and use. Complex in design and use.

USES OF
INPUT
DEVICES
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of a Mouse

1. To select an item on the monitor.

2. To direct the movement of the cursor
3. To open or launch application or program.
4. For playing computer game
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of a Keyboard

1. Keyboard is used to key in or type on the

computer.
2. It is also used to issue command on
the computer.
3. It can also be used to play computer
game
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses Digital Camera

1. To capture or take and store images digitally.

2. To record videos with sound.

MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of Touchpad

1. To control the movement of the cursor.

2. To open an application.
3. To select an item on a screen.
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses Of Fingerprint Scanner

1. To capture and store the fingerprints details of an

individual
2. It is used to authenticate the fingerprint of an individual
in order to grant them access into a system.
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of Signature Pad

1. Signing forms and other paperwork

2. For adding signature to ID cards

a video on a signature
pad
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of Barcode Reader

1. To capture information about a product into a database.

2. To read barcodes of products.
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of Microphone

1. It allows users to speak into the computer.

2. For recording sound at the music studio
3. It is also used with public address system to produce
sound
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC INPUT DEVICE

Uses of Scanner

1. To convert printed material into digital format.

2. To share hard copy photo with family and friends on the
internet.
3. For copying of documents.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES

KEYBOARD

Advantages of Keyboard
1. Enables fast entry of new text into
a document.

2. Most people find them easy to use.

3. Easy to do verification check as data is

entered, as it appears on
the screen
simultaneously.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES

KEYBOARD

Disadvantages of Keyboard
1. Users with limited arm/wrist use can find keyboards
hard to use.

2. Entering data is slow when compared to direct data

entry (e.g., OMR).

3. They use up desk space as they are quite large.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES

MOUSE

Advantages of Mouse
1. Small in size and does not take much
space.

2. Faster to select an option by a mouse

than a keyboard.
3. Enables easy navigation through
applications and the internet.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES

MOUSE

Disadvantages of Mouse
1. People with restricted hand/wrist
movement can find it hard to operate a
mouse.
2. They are hard to use if there is no flat
surface available
3. They are easily damage.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES

JOYSTICK

Advantages of Joystick
1. Easier to navigate round a screen
compared
to a keyboard.

2. Control is in three dimensions.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES

JOYSTICK

Disadvantages of Joystick
1. More difficult to control the on-screen
pointer with a joystick than with mouse.
2. Typing or entering text with a joystick is
typically slow and
inefficient.
3. Some software applications or games
may not be optimized for joystick
input.
AREAS WHERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES
ARE USED.

KEYBOARD:

• Used in offices for typing documents, emails, and

reports.
• Essential for programmers and coders.
• Commonly used in data entry jobs.
AREAS WHERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES
ARE USED.

MOUSE:

• Standard input device for desktop computers in various

industries.
• Widely used in graphic design for precise cursor control.
• Essential for gaming, especially in strategy or first-person
shooter games.
AREAS WHERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES
ARE USED.

TOUCHSCREENS:

• Found in smartphones, tablets, and interactive kiosks for

user-friendly interaction.
• Used in retail for point-of-sale systems and self-service
terminals.
• Integral in medical devices and diagnostic equipment for
intuitive control.
AREAS WHERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES
ARE USED.

STYLUS/PEN INPUT:

• Widely used in digital art and design for drawing and

illustration.

• Common in tablets with note-taking capabilities, popular

among students and professionals.

• Utilized in industries like architecture for sketching and

annotating designs.
Formative Assessment (10 marks)
1. Differentiate between manual and automatic input
devices
(4 marks)

2. Identify two areas where each of the following input

devices is mostly used.
