1. Sewer – A pipe or system of pipes that carries wastewater and sewage away from homes and
buildings to a treatment plant or septic tank.

2. Sewage – The wastewater and human waste that is carried away by a sewer.

3. Sanitary Sewage – Wastewater that comes from toilets, sinks, showers, and other sources that
do not contain significant amounts of contaminants.

4. Sewerage – The system of pipes, pumps, and other infrastructure that is used to collect and
transport wastewater and sewage.

5. Soil Drainage System – A plumbing system that collects waste and wastewater from toilets and
transfers it to the sewer.

6. Waste Drainage System – A plumbing system that collects waste and wastewater from sinks,
showers, and other sources and transfers it to the sewer.

7. Black water – Waste and wastewater from toilets that contains fecal matter and other bodily
waste.

8. Gray water – Waste and wastewater from sinks, showers, and other sources that does not
contain significant amounts of contaminants.

9. Direct waste – Waste that is discharged directly into a sewer or septic tank.
10. Indirect waste – Waste that is discharged into a plumbing fixture, such as a sink or toilet, before
being transported to a sewer or septic tank
