entertainment is not culture and we cannot define culture as
entertainment.”
He also appreciated the efforts of SPIC MACAY in conducting
events every year to promote Indian culture and music at the
international level.

Night tried to bulldoze it deeper into yesterday, when
Umayalpuram K Sivaraman stepped onto the stage
for a solo performance at VNIT auditorium. Was it his age –
the oldest artist at 87 — or his being the highest-decorated
performer – Padma Vibhushan — that prompted SPIC
MACAY to introduce the living legend of mridangam as the
first artist of a dusk-to-dawn concert? Perhaps it was both.
Not for nothing is he known as a Vidwan.
Even before he started performing, Sivaraman was charming
the young volunteers and guests in a beaming green room.
He showed no irritation even though his playing time – 90 were crying for a walkabout. Upper limbs were trying to

The alacrity with which Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar occupied
the stage vacated by Sh Sivaraman is a study worth
undertaking for all airlines about their turnaround
time between flights. There were four other performers
for the night and this quickness ensured all got their
allotted time.
A few days ago, Kashalkar was in the cooler climes of
Kashmir for SPIC MACAY’s Shruti Amrit concert. And here
he was in hot and humid Nagpur. Three compositions in 80
minutes had Hindustani vocal aficionados in a complete
trance. It was half past midnight. Heads, shoulders and
