Bogie Anchorage, Replacement
DANGER
Do not attempt to repair or service this vehicle without suf-
ficient training, the correct service literature, and the proper
tools. Failure to follow this could make the vehicle unsafe
and lead to serious personal injury or death.

You must read and understand the precautions and guide-

lines in Service Information, Function Group 60, “General
Safety Practices, Steering, Front Axle and Suspension”
before performing this procedure. If you are not properly
trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor
for training before you perform it.

1
Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a level surface,
applying the parking brake, placing the transmission in Neu-
tral, and chocking the front wheels.

2
Using safe lifting methods, raise the vehicle frame and sup-
port the front and back of the suspension with jack stands.

3
Remove the nuts and washers attaching the two U-bolts. Re-
move the spring saddle cap from the U-bolts and springs.

Remove all but two of the bogie anchorage bolts attaching it
to the frame rail. Loosen, but do not remove, two bolts at the
top of the bogie anchorage.
Note: Leave two top attaching bolts loose but in place so the
bogie anchorage can be supported with a lift to prevent it
from falling during removal.

14
Attach a chain to two holes in the top of the bogie anchorage
and use a lift or overhead crane to support the weight of the
bogie anchorage. Remove the two bolts left in place to sup-
port the bogie anchorage in the earlier step and carefully
move the bogie anchorage assembly from the frame rail and
to a safe location out of the way.

15
Remove the chain from the removed bogie anchorage as-
sembly and attach it to two holes in the top of the replace-
ment bogie anchorage, then use a lift or overhead crane to
move the replacement bogie anchorage assembly into posi-
tion on the frame rail.

16
Attach the bogie anchorage at the frame cross member using
the four bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts but do not torque at
this time.

top of the bogie anchorage.

Torque the M14 bolts attaching the bogie anchorage to the
frame rail to 175 ±30 Nm (129 ±22 ft-lb). Torque the M16
bolts attaching the bogie anchorage to the frame rail and the
cross member to 275 ±45 Nm (203 ±33 ft-lb).

the fasteners and torque to 275 ±45 Nm (203 ±33 ft-lb).

20
Apply soapy water to the axle spindle (part of bogie anchor-
age) and the inside of the outer rubber conical bearing, then
position the cradle/bearing assembly onto the axle spindle.
Note: The cradle should be mounted on the axle spindle so
that the cradle part number is facing outward.

21
Insert the lock cone into the outer conical bearing and secure
it with the fasteners (M24 bolt, washer, nut). Tighten the lock
cone bolt and torque (at the bolt head) to
850 ±140 Nm (627 ±103 ft-lb).
Note: When tightening the M24 lock cone bolt, it is important
that the top surface of the cradle is as parallel as possible to
the top of the frame. Tilting the top of the cradle one way or
the other will lead to a load transfer via the springs from one
axle to the other. Too much of such a load transfer will affect
traction.

tioned over the spring plates.

should be installed one at a time.

the upper and lower springs. Tighten the spring plate fasten-
ers and torque to 85 ±15 Nm (63 ±11 ft-lb).

26
Install two new U-bolts and the spring saddle cap to secure
the cradle to the stack of leaf springs. Secure the U-bolts with
the washers and nuts after making sure the springs are cen-
tered on the cradle mount. Using an X pattern, tighten the U-
bolt nuts to specification, depending on the size of the U-
bolts. A manual clicker-type torque wrench is recommended
for torque tightening the U-bolts.
For M20 U-bolts, tighten to 540 ±60 Nm (398 ±44 ft-lb).
For M24 U-bolts, tighten to 660 ±75 Nm (487 ±55 ft-lb).
Note: Torque on one side of a U-bolt significantly affects tor-
que on the other side of the U-bolt. When tightening, both
sides need to be brought up together in incremental steps.
Too much torque will cause the U-bolt to yield or fail.

Note: With multileaf springs, a bolt extends through all leafs.

The bolt head is centered toward the cradle.

Note: With parabolic springs, there is no bolt. Rather, either a

white painted line is centered toward the cradle, or a 2 mm
spacer with a cut is used between the parabolic spring and
W6081354 the cradle and positioned with the cut toward the cradle.

the preferred method.
