Experiment-1

Aim of the Experiment

To trace the lines of force due to a bar magnet in the earth’s magnetic
field pointing north and to finds its neutral point.
APPARATUS REQUIRED
 A Bar Magnet
 Compass Needle
 A Sheet of white paper
 A Drawing Board With Pins
THEORY
A line of forces is a curve in a magnetic field such that the tangent
drawn at any point on the curve gives the direction of the resultant
magnetic field at the point. If the bar magnet kept in a magnetic
meridian with its north pole pointing towards the geographic north the
earth, the field due to the magnet and the earth are in the same
direction at the point on the axial line and opposite at point on the
equatorial line. So the resultant field is stronger at the axial line and
weaker at the equatorial point.

THE NUTREAL POINT IS ON THE EQITORIAL

LINE:
The magnetic field at the neutral point is given by
B(equatorial) = BH = (μ0/4π). (2m/r3)
= distance of each neutral point from centre of magnet
n = dipole moment of magnet
The neutral point is a point where the resultant magnetic field due to
magnet is zero. At this point, magnetic field due to magnet is equal bo
and opposite to the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field.
PROCEDURE :
 A proper sheet was perfectly placed over the drawing placed over the
drawing board and fixed with the help of pins.
 The magnetic needle as placed at the centre of the paper sheet and
magnetic meridian was found out.
 The given bar magnet was placed on the magnetic meridian with its North
pole pointing towards the geographic north of the earth.
 The magnetic needle was placed near one end of the magnet. When the
deflection of the needle stopped, two dot marks were given on the paper
corresponding to the position of both the end of the needle.
 The magnetic field was placed at subsequent position so that one end of
its coincides with other point already plotted. The other end of the needle
was then plotted by the dot mark. This was continued till a series of dots
were drawn on this way.
EXPERIMENT-2
AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT
To trace the lines of force due to a bar magnet in the eart’s magnetic
field pointing south and to find its neutral point.

APPARATUS REQUIRED
 A Bar Magnet
 Compass Needle
 A Sheet of White Paper
 A Drawing Board With Pins

THEORY
A line of forces is a curve in a magnetic field such that the tangent
drawn at any point on the curve gives the direction of the resultant
magnetic field at the point. If the bar magnet kept in a magnetic
meridian with its south pole pointing towards the geographic north of
the earth, the field due to the magnet and the earth are in the same
direction at the point on the axial line and opposite at point on the
equatorial line. So the resultant field is stronger at the equatorial point
and weaker at the axial point.
THE NUTREAL POINT IS ON THE EQITORIAL
LINE:
The magnetic field at the neutral point is given by
B(equatorial) = BH = (μ0/4π). (2m/r3)
r = distance of each neutral point from centre of magnet
m = dipole moment of magnet
The neutral point is a point where the resultant magnetic field due to
magnet is zero. At this point, magnetic field due to magnet is equal to
and opposite to the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field.

PROCEDURE:
 A proper sheet was perfectly placed over the drawing placed
over the drawing board and fixed with the help of pins.
 The magnetic needle as placed at the centre of the paper sheet
and magnetic meridian was found out.
 The given bar magnet was placed on the magnetic meridian
with its South pole pointing towards the geographic north of the
earth.
 The magnetic needle was placed near one end of the magnet.
When the deflection of the needle stopped, two dot marks were
given on the paper corresponding to the position of both the end
of the needle.
 The magnetic field was placed at subsequent position so that
one end of its coincides with other point already plotted. The
other end of the needle was then plotted by the dot mark. This
was continued till a series of dots were drawn on this way
several lines of forces were drawn due to bar magnet in the
earth’s magnetic field symmetrically on the both sides of paper.
 The neutral points were located by observing the points where
no magnetic influence was felt by needle. The point where it
freely round is neutral point. Neutral point was found out on the
eqatorial line.
PRECAUTIONS:
 No two lines of force cross each other.
 Neutral point should be in symmetrical with respect to
magnetic field.
 Lines of forces starts from the north pole and end on south pole
of the bar magnet.
