1.INTRODUCTION
Computer numerical control (CNC) is the numerical control system in which a dedicated
computer is built into the control to perform basic and advanced NC functions. CNC
controls are also referred to as soft wired NC systems because most of their control
functions are implemented by the control software programs CNC is a computer assisted
process to control general purpose machines from instructions generated by a processor
and stored in a memory system.
In CNC machining, the CPU is the part that controls the entire CNC
system. The CPU received the data and stores it in the memory of the program. The said
data is then decoded. During the decoding process, the data is translated into signals that
control both the positions and velocity. The CPU also oversees the movements of the
control axis.
2
1.3 Advantages of CNC systems
➢ CNC machines can be used continuously and only need to be switched off for
occasional maintenance.
3
➢ The manufacturing process can be simulated virtually and no need to make a
prototype or a model.
➢ This saves time and money. Once programmed, these machines can be left and do
not require any human intervention, except for work loading and unloading.
➢ These machines can manufacture several components to the required accuracy
without any fatigue as in the case of manually operated machines.
➢ Savings in time that could be achieved with the CNC machines are quite
significant.
➢ Increase in electrical maintenance, high initial investment and high per hour
operating costs than the traditional systems.
4
1.5 Application of CNC Machine Tools
➢ CNC was initially applied to metal working machinery: Mills, Drills, boring
machines, punch presses etc. and now expanded to robotics, grinders, welding
machinery, EDM's, flame cutters and also for inspection equipment etc.
➢ The machines controlled by CNC can be classified into the following categories:
➢ CNC mills and machining centers,
➢ CNC lathes and turning centers
➢ CNC electrical discharge machining (EDM)
➢ CNC grinding machines
➢ CNC cutting machines (laser, plasma, electron, or flame)
➢ CNC fabrication machines (sheet metal punch press, bending machine, or press
brake)

1.7 VMC (Vertical milling machine)
Vertical Machining Centres, also known as Vertical Milling Machines, create holes in flat parts. The
VMC technology is favoured when three-axis work is done on a single face, such as in-mould and die
works.
Multiple adjustments are available on VMCs. For example, on the worktable, there are
numerous angles of approach and rotating and other positioning devices. The incorporated
computerized controls enable automation, repeatability, tool selection/change, and contour
control. These new CNC machines raised the productivity of the “milling” machine to
unprecedented heights, giving rise to the term VMC (Vertical Machining Centre).
VMC Machines are chiefly used to turn raw blocks of metal like aluminium, steel and other
metal components. The most common industrial applications of these are cutting, drilling,
shaping and moulding of any kind. Industries using these processes are the automotive,
shipbuilding, machine shops, machine manufacturing and other manufacturing industries.
6
1.8 VMC machine components
➢ The structure is simpler: - The vertical machining centre has a simple structure
and is convenient to clamp the workpiece in the desired position
➢ Better cooling efficiency: - Gravity applies to VMC designs. Coolant is sprayed
over the top of the machine tool and workpiece, dripping down to cover the rest
of the target
➢ Setup and operation are easier: - The VMC Controller Manufacturer has an
unobstructed view allowing the operator to observe the operation and make
changes if necessary to resolve any
➢ Issues Space requirements are less: -Vertical designs take up less floor space
than horizontal designs.
➢ Greater precision: -VMC can produce complex shapes and structures with high
precision.
7
1.10 Disadvantages of VMC
➢ Despite costs gradually declining, CNC machines are more expensive than
manually operated equipment.
➢ When a machine malfunctions, a highly skilled professional is needed to resolve
the problem.
➢ Fewer and fewer fresh students learn those skills as the demand for manual
machine operators declines. Long-preserved skills might finally disappear
entirely as a result of this.
