EARLY ADOLESCENCE
(12-14)
1. Physical :
Experiencing puberty (hormonal changes)
In girls: start their menstrual period, widen hips, body fat increased.
In boys: growth of facial, pubic, and body hair, increased muscle size and
deepening of vocal chords.
Visible physical changes (increased height and weight)
Maturity of organs needed for reproduction

2. Cognitive :
Experiencing growth changes in the brain that result in the ability
to think more abstractly and be able to solve problems better
Changes in language use that allow for increased ability to use
speech to express oneself and understand sarcasm and irony
3. Emotional :
Adolescents are able to balance high self-expectations with low self-
esteem.
They experience increased moodiness in the search for their identity,
which is largely driven by peer pressure and a strong need for
conformity and acceptance.

4. Social :
Adolescents will spend more time with their peers than with their
family
Starts showing interest in the opposite or even same sex which
may involve dating in groups
Youth may start to be curious and experiment with alcohol
MIDDLE ADOLESCENCE
(15-17)
1. Physical:
Girl: Have typically completed full physical development. Dissatisfied with their body and weight,
due to the increase in body fat.
Boy: Reaching their peak and are close to finishing their physical growth. Muscle mass increase,
body satisfaction.

2. Emotional:
Easily to feel overwhelmed by the possibilities of their future with regard to collage and career.

3. Social:
Dating relationships become more intimate.
Start personal awareness of personal sexual orientation and development of sexual identity.
Increase interest in sexual experimentation.

4. Cognitive:
Responsible/rational. Understanding the consequences of their behavior and planning for
their future.
Independence. Develop a stronger sense of self and rely less on the opinions of others.
Curious and want to find their own identity.
LATE ADOLESCENCE
(18-21)
1. Emotional:
Changing the relationship with parents and family to be better and balanced.

2. Social:
Experience in sexual terms with other people is more developed and more intimate.
supported by a sense of wanting to try new things
Self-development develops much more rapidly in the transition from middle adolescence to
late adolescence
At the age of late adolescence, there are many drug and alcohol users due to their
development in a bad environment

3. Cognitive
Pressure from other people is no longer a big problem for people at this stage. people tend
to care more about themselves than others
People at this stage exploring self-identity more in terms of education, work, family roles
and relationships with others
