I.- Measuring the volume of regular solids

Activity 1:

Measure the dimensions of two regular solids (cylinder and sphere) by using the
calliper and complete the following table. Express your results writing the uncertainty
(A column) and using significant figures (B column)

A (lengths in cm) B (lengths in cm)

Height (h): Height (h):

Cylinder
Basis Diameter (d): Basis Diameter (d):

Sphere Diameter (d): Diameter (d):

Activity 2:

Work out the volume of the solids and express it with the correct number of significant
figures.

II.: Measuring densities

Density is a property of matter that measures the mass contained per unit
volume. We can easily work it out using the formula
m
d
V
The SI density unit is the kilogram per cubic metre (kg/m3) though a very useful
unit is the gram per cubic centimetre (g/cm3).

Activity 3:

Measure the masses of the cylinder and the sphere and express them correctly in grams.
Use a triple beam balance (tbb) and an electronic balance (eb)

Activity 4:
Using the above results work out the densities of the solids and express them writing the
correct number of significant figures.
