EXERCISE:1

Steel bar of cross section 500 mm 2 is acted upon by the forces shown in Figure. Determine
the total elongation of the bar. For steel, consider E = 200 GPa.

EXERCISE 2

A 12 cm by 5 cm I-beam is subjected to a shearing force of 10 kN. Calculate the value of the

transverse shear stress at the neutral axis and at the top of the web. Take I = 220 cm 4 ,
Area = 9.4 cm 2 , web thickness = 0.35 cm, Dlange thickness = 0.55 cm.

EXERCISE 5

An inclined manometer is required to measure an air pressure of 3mm of water to an

accuracy of +/- 3%.

The inclined arm is 8mm in diameter and the larger arm has a diameter of 24mm. The
manometric fluid has density 740 kg/m 3 and the scale may be read to +/- 0.5mm.

What is the angle required to ensure the desired accuracy may be achieved?

EXERCISE : 6

A rod going in circles at constant rate. A uniform rod of mass m and length l is connected to a
motor a end O. a ball of mass m is attached to the rod at end B. the motor turns the rod in
counterclockwise direction at a constant angular speed w. there is gravity pointing in the –j
direction . find the torque applied by the motor(i) at the instant shown and (ii) θ=0°, 90°,
180°. How does the torque change if the angular speed is doubled?
