1) A simply supported beam is loaded as shown in Fig C1. The beam has a square
cross section of side 200 mm.

b) Calculate the reactions at the supports. (4

c) Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment diagrams indicating all
principal values. (12 marks)
d) Determine the magnitude of the maximum bending moment. (2 marks)
e) Determine the maximum bending stress induced in the beam. (6
marks)

2a) A hollow propeller shaft of diameter ratio 3:5 transmit a maximum torque of 185
kNm.
The allowable stress for the shaft material is 70 MN/m2. Determine suitable values
for the diameters of the shaft. (13
marks)

b) Fresh water is pumped through a pipe AB of length 21 m by means of a pump


situated at B. The pipe rises at an angle of 45o to the horizontal. The pipe diameter
at the lower end A is 150 mm and the diameter decreases uniformly to 75 mm at the
upper end B. At B, the velocity of the water is 6 m/s and the gauge pressure is 0.8
bar. Assuming frictionless flow and taking density of fresh water as 1000 kg/m3,
determine the pressure at A. (13 marks)

3) A centrifugal pump operating at 1450 rpm has the following known design
parameters:
Inlet blade angle = 35o Outlet blade angle = 40o
Inlet impeller diameter = 150 mm Outlet impeller diameter = 300 mm
Inlet impeller width = 40 mm Outlet impeller width = 18 mm
Assume negligible vane thickness and zero inlet whirl velocity of fresh water. Losses
in the impeller amount to 40% of the outlet kinetic head. Determine:

a) discharge in litres/sec, (6 marks)


b) absolute velocity of the fluid at the outlet, (8 marks)
c) torque on the impeller about the shaft axis, and (6 marks)
d) manometric efficiency. (6
marks)

4a) State the function of a collar bearing. (3 marks)


A collar bearing has contact surfaces of 300 mm external diameter and 200 mm
internal diameter. The axial load is 21 kN. Coefficient of friction between the
rubbing surfaces is 0.07. Calculate the power absorbed in friction at 310rpm:
i) for uniform pressure, and
ii) for uniform wear (10 marks)

b) An object moves with Simple Harmonic Motion between two points 0.8 m apart. The
natural frequency of oscillation is 5 Hz. Determine:
i) period of oscillation, (3 marks)
ii) maximum velocity, and (6 marks)
iii) maximum acceleration. (4 marks)
