Exercise 1: (7 points)
A toy car of mass m=80 g is projected along a track ABCD, reaches point A with a speed VA = 4 𝑚𝑚/𝑠𝑠, the car
follows the track around a vertical loop of
radius R and then passes point D.
Assume that friction and air resistance are
negligible. The horizontal plane passing
through B is taken as reference level for the
gravitational potential energy.
Take g=10 m/s2.
1. Calculate at the point A:
1.1.The kinetic energy of the car. (1pt.)
1.2.The gravitational potential energy of the system (S) [car; Earth]. (1pt.)
1.3.The mechanical energy of (S). (1pt.)
2. The mechanical energy of (S) is conserved between A and D. why? (0.5 pts.)
3. The kinetic energy of the car when it is at the top of the loop (point C) is 0.448 J.
3.1.Determine the gravitational potential energy of (S) at point C. (1pt.)
3.2.Deduce that the radius R of the loop is R = 0.12 m . (1 pt.)
4. In reality, a resistive force ⃗f due to friction and air resistance acts on the car so that the speed of the car at
point D is 3 m/s.
4.1.Determine, at point D, the mechanical energy of (S). (1 pt.)
4.2.Deduce the variation in the mechanical energy of the system [(car), Earth] during the motion between A
and D. (0.5 pts.)

Exercise 2: (6 points)
Solar energy is a renewable energy source used to generate electricity.
The batteries power the LEDs used in the information board.
The solar cells keep the batteries charged.
1. What is meant by an energy source being renewable? (1 pt.)
2. Name two other renewable energy sources used to generate electricity.
(1pt.)
2. Complete each of the following sentences. (1.5 pts.)
- The solar cells transfer radiant energy to ............................................................. energy.
- The batteries transfer ............................................................. energy to electrical energy.
- The LEDs transfer electrical energy to ............................................................. energy.
3. When the total energy input to the solar cells is 200 joules, the useful energy output from the solar cells to
the batteries is 50 joules. Calculate the efficiency of the solar cells. (1pt.)
4. Choose, from the three statements below, one statement that gives the reason for using solar cells to charge
the batteries. (0.5 pts.)
Statement 1: Solar cells will charge the batteries day and night.
Statement 2: The information board can be used anywhere it is needed.
Statement 3: A small number of solar cells produce a lot of electricity.
5. The electricity used in homes in Lebanon is normally generated in a fossil fuel power station.
Give two advantages of using solar cells to generate this electricity. (1pt.)

Exercise 3: (7 points)
Read carefully the following text and answer the questions.
A group of researchers at the American University of Beirut said in a statement on the ongoing electricity crisis that the
level of toxic emissions in the country may have increased by 300
percent from pre-crisis levels as a result of the increased reliance on
diesel generators. The researchers based their projection on a scenario
in which diesel generators are operating 24 hours a day, amounting to
an eightfold increase in their hours of operation in Beirut; A 300
percent increase in emissions would translate into an annual increase
of about 550 cancer cases, an estimated 3,000 people developing
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and about 500 additional
hospital admissions due to cardiovascular diseases.

Questions l’orient le jour

1. The text mentions diesel generators.

1.1. In what form is the energy stored in the diesel? (0.5 pts.)
1.2. The combustion of the diesel releases some gases into atmosphere. Name two of these gases. (1pt.)
1.3. Pick out from the text two harmful effects on the human health resulting from the increased use of diesel
generators. (0.5 pts.)
2. An apartment house in Lebanon consumes, during 8 hours daily of normal functioning, an average electric energy
E=8.8 kW.h.
Determine the monthly amount to be paid by the consumer knowing that the average cost of one kWh is10,000 L.L.
(1month =30days) (1pt.)
3. The general director of housing bank talks about “solar loans” to buy solar cells. If you benefit from solar loans, the
monthly amount to be paid by the consumer is 3,000,000LL. Deduce, which of the two energies, solar or electric, is
more economical. (1pt.)
4. One of the possible method used to generate electricity in lebanon is “the wind turbine”.
4.1. Describe how a wind turbine generates electricity from energy in the wind. (1pt.)
4.2. Apart from cost, state two advantages of generating electricity using wind turbines compared with using a power
station that burns coal. (1pt.)
4.3. Apart from cost, state two disadvantages of generating electricity using wind turbines compared with using a
power station that burns coal. (1pt.)
