Zoulikha, the Martyr of Cherchell

Zoulikha Echaib Oudai, born Yamina Echaib is an Algerian chenouas revolutionary. She was
born on May 7, 1911 in Hadjout and grew up in Cherchell. She had five children. She was a
responsible political military activist and fighter in the ranks of the National Liberation Front (FLN)
in the town of Cherchell. (§1)

After her husband El Hadj Si Larbi Oudai and one of her sons were executed by the French
forces, she decided to join the FLN where she soon became responsible for the region of Cherchell.
She participated in intelligence operations, rapprochement between the FLN and the Algerian
people and she provided funds for the FLN from her husband’s money. (§2)

After the Cherchell FLN network was dismantled, the French army set her an ambush in the
Wadi Haizer. The French Forces tortured Zoulikha for ten days straight when she was arrested on
October 15, 1957. She was attached to an armored vehicle and exposed to the crowd when she
didn’t deliver the names of her comrades, to instill fear in the hearts of the population. After
refusing to disclose any secret information, the enraged French army threw her from a helicopter,
earning her the tittle of ‘Mother of Martyrs’. (§3)

Her body was not recovered until 1984. She is now interred in a martyr’s cemetery in
Menaceur, Tipaza. Like many Algerian freedom fighters and martyrs, Lala Zoulikha showed great
will to liberate Algeria. ‘Adapted From The Net ’
