NARRATIVE TEXT

A. What is Narrative Text?

1. Type of Narrative Text

A narrative text entertains, instructs or informs readers by telling a

story. Narrative texts deal with imaginary or real world and can be

fictional (fairy tales, novels, science fiction, horror or adventure

stories, fables, myths, legends, etc.)

There are lots of different kinds of narrative text, such as:

a. Fictional narrative

A fictional narrative is a story that is not based on real events or

real people. It can be a novel, short story, fable, or fairy tale.

b. Autobiography

An autobiography is a narrative text that tells the life story of the

author, written from a first-person perspective.

c. Biography

A biography is a narrative text that tells the life story of someone

other than the author, written from a third-person perspective.

d. Memoir

A memoir is a narrative text that focuses on a particular period

or event in the author’s life, often written from a first-person

perspective.

1
e. Legend

A legend is kind of a folklore. It’s a traditional story that has been

passed on for generations – it often explains the origins of a

particular culture or society.

Narrative genres are a form of classification that let us sort the types

of books into different stylistic choices. These stylistic elements may

include characteristics such as themes, tropes, settings, character

types and structure. Although we have different types of books, it's

not uncommon for narrative pieces to fall into multiple genres,

especially if the work contains a multitude of subplots. Some types

of narrative genres include:

2. Definition of Narrative Text

Narrative text is a text that tells about sequence of event in the past.

According to Barbara as cited ini Khusnul (2017), the purposes of

narrative text are to entertain, to express the feelings, to inform and

to persuade the readers. It also has another function that is about to

deal with actual or various experiences in different ways. On the

other hand, Mark and Anderson (in Sari, 2015) state that the

narrative text is constructed to appeal to our emoticon and

imagination that can make us laugh or cry think about our life or

consider our benefit. If the students understand about the content of

narrative text, they will feel the situation of the story.

Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain and attract readers

by presenting a story or event that has a problem that causes conflict

and at the end of the story there is a resolution that can be a happy

ending or even a sad ending.

Narrative text includes any type of writing that relates a series of

events and includes both fiction (novels, short stories, poems) and

nonfiction (memoirs, biographies, news stories). Both forms tell

stories that use imaginative language and express emotion, often

through the use of imagery, metaphors, and symbols.

5
B. Structure of Narrative Text

1. Structure of Narrative Text

a. Orientation

Orientation sets the stage for the story. Ideally, the orientation

should answer the questions “who,” “where, and “when.” So,

when reading the orientation part, we should be able to identify

the character and setting (both time and place) of the story.

b. Complication

This section contains the problems that occur within a story. It is

divided into three parts, namely:

• Rising action: Problems begin to emerge

• Climax: Peak of the problem

• Falling action: The tension of the problem begins to

decrease, and the solution starts to emerge

c. Resolution

The resolution is the part of the narrative where the conflict or

problem introduced earlier in the story is resolved or

addressed. This may involve characters finding a solution to

their issues, overcoming obstacles, or experiencing personal

growth. The resolution helps tie up loose ends, providing closure

6
for the reader and allowing them to see how the events of the

story have impacted the characters.

d. Re-orientation / Evaluation

Re-orientation, also known as evaluation, is an optional

component of a narrative text that serves to reflect on the story

and its events, reinforcing the moral lesson or theme. This

section typically appears at the end of the story, providing a

summary or commentary on the characters’ experiences and the

consequences of their actions. It helps the reader understand

the significance of the story and encourages them to consider

the message or lesson the author intended to convey.

2. Example of Narrative Text

The Origin of Surabaya

Once upon a time, in the northern part of East Java, there lived a scary

giant crocodile. He was the ruler of the river and a predator who was

feared by all the animals in the forest near the river. The name of the

crocodile was Baya. He was very good at hunting, so all of the animals

in the jungle were afraid of him. Baya lived in a river. In the sea, there

lived a wild shark named Sura. He ruled the sea, and every fish were

scared of him. However, Sura felt bored because he ate fish every day.

He was curious about the river near the sea.

One day he decided to go to the river. At the side of the river, there was

a deer that was drinking water. Sura felt hungry, so he swam silently to

the edge and jumped out to catch the deer. Sura was happy to get such

delicious food. After eating the deer, Sura became addicted. The next

day, he hunted back on the river and got a lot of food. After a couple of

days, Baya became suspicious because it was harder and harder for

him to find prey. He started investigating what was happening. When

Baya saw Sura catched a little monkey in the river, Baya became angry.

“Hey Sura, what are you doing here? This is my territory. How dare you

snatch my prey.” Sura was not afraid of Baya – he challenged Baya to

8
a fight. “Hey, I can look for food anywhere I want. It’s not just your

territory here. All animals are free to look for food here.”

Finally, a fight could not be avoided, and the fight began. Because both

of them were strong, the fight was very long. For days, all of the animals

in the forest were disturbed by the fight. They couldn’t sleep. Finally, the

two wild animals were exhausted. No one won, and no one lost, because

both of them were equally strong. “Sura, we better end this fight. I’m too

tired.” “So am I, Baya. Okay, let’s end this battle.” “Sura, first, we need

to limit our hunting area. The end of the river is the limit. Don’t you break

the line, or you will feel the consequences.” “Okay Baya, I accept this

agreement.” Sura finally left the river and returned to the sea. For

months, the forest calmed down. There were no fights between Sura

and Baya, but Sura felt uneasy. He longed to eat deer meat like before.

There were a lot of fish in the sea, but it wasn’t enough for him. He

couldn’t bear it, so quietly, he swam toward the mouth of the river, “Ah,

if I look for prey near the river’s mouth, Baya won’t know because he

lives further up the river.” Unfortunately, no prey approached the mouth

of the river. Sura was tired of waiting. Finally, he swam up the river

toward the forest. Sura wanted to go back to the jungle again. This time,

he would be careful not to be caught by Baya. “Hi hi hi, I will catch the

prey and immediately bring it out to sea, so Baya won’t see me. Hi hi

hi.”

9
The plan was successful, and for months Sura hunted in the river without

being discovered. Over time, Baya became suspicious because again,

his prey was reduced. But this time he didn’t see Sura on the river. But

he believed, this was Sura’s doing. “Hmmm, this must be Sura! Watch

out, Sura!” Then, Baya prepared plan. Baya found a deer but didn’t catch

him right away. Instead, he hurt the deer’s leg so he couldn’t run away.

The deer was placed on the edge of the river, then Baya hid. A short

time later, Sura swam up the river and saw the injured deer. He felt

excited because the deer was fat. “Wow, lucky me! Today, I’ll have a

feast! Na na na na.” Just as he was about to bring the deer to the sea,

suddenly Baya confronted him. “Hey! You sure are stubborn and

shameless Sura! How greedy are you? Imagine, the fish in the sea are

abundant, but you are still hunting in my area.” “Hey Baya! If you want,

you can hunt in the sea. I don’t forbid you.” “Hmm, I don’t like fish, and I

especially can’t stand the sea water.” “Well, it’s okay if you don’t want it.

At least I have offered it to you.” Sura answered lightly and dragged the

deer to the sea. Baya got angry, then attacked Sura. “Hey! Where do

you think you’re bringing that deer?” “To the sea! I’ll eat it there.” “Bring

the deer here, I caught it to trap you.” “Well, it’s your fault you didn’t eat

the deer yourself.” “You forgot our agreement? This river is my territory!”

“Hey, if there is water, there is me! This agreement is ridiculous.” “Okay,

10
then our agreement is cancelled. Now, the strongest one has the right

to rule this area.”

Finally, Baya attacked Sura, a fight couldn’t be prevented. This time it

was even more exciting, no one dared to approach the area of the fight.

“Ah! Hiya!” “Grr” Sura always dodged his attacks, and Baya became

annoyed. When Sura was off guard, Baya managed to bite his tail.

“Ouch, my tail!” Sura did not want to lose. Both of them were in pain and

seriously injured. However, Baya did not despair, he continued to bite

until Sura’s tail was cut off. Sura was in so much pain, he ran away

leaving Baya towards the sea. Since then, Sura has not dared to

approach the river. And since he no longer had a tail, he couldn’t swim

as hard as he once had, “Argh it’s so painful, oh my!” To commemorate

the fierce fight, the area where the two animals fought was

called Surabaya, and the name remains to this day.

busy carrying the money to his house, the thieves came. The boss of

Ali Baba’s house, they made a plan to kill him the following night. Some

of the thieves hid in big jars, and the boss pretended that he was a

merchant who wanted to sell the jars to Ali Baba. Ali Baba who was a

kind man invited the boss of the thief to have lunch together. After lunch

12

found that there were thieves inside the jars. She finally boiled hot oil

and poured it into the jars to kill all of them. The boss of the thieves was

caught, and put into prison. Ali Baba was saved from the danger, and

he finally lived happily ever after with his maid who became his wife

shortly after.

A Lane Going Up The Hill

It had been a heavy rainstorm in Kampung Sepang. Jabri and Halil had

just finished their dinner together at Jabri’s house. They were sitting in

the living room for coffee and conversation, hoping, the rain would stop

soon.

It was half past eleven at night and the downpour was showing no signs

for stopping. “It looks like you’ll have to spent the night here, Halil.” Said

Jabri “No way,” Halil said, “I’ve to be at work early tomorrow morning.”

A few moment later Halil got into the car, started the engine, and said

good night to Jibri. Something told him that he shouldn’t have turned off

the lane going up the hill, but it was the shortest way home. He knew

that lane. It run across an old Chinese cemetery. There were no lights,

no cars, no people, just Halil and his old car.

All of a sudden, a white shape appeared in the middle of the lane. Halil

shone his beam of light in that direction. The white shape turned to Halil.

He saw a pair of crimson eyes staring at him. It was a-long-haired

woman in a long white dress. She grinned at Halil.

17
At once, Halil felt his blood frozen. His heartbeat stopped. His mouth

opened but he was speechless. His eyes opened widely in terror.

car and sped away just in time.

“I think I’ll take up your offer to spend the night here after all,” Halil told

Jabri with his legs trembling.

slipped and fell into the river.

There was a dove sitting on a branch of a tree who saw an ant falling

into the river. The dove quickly plucked a leaf and dropped it into the

river near the struggling ant. The ant moved towards the leaf and

climbed up onto it. Soon, the leaf drifted to dry ground, and the ant

jumped out. She looked up to the tree and thanked the dove.

Later, the same day, a bird catcher nearby was about to throw his net

over the dove hoping to trap it. An ant saw him and guessed what he

was about to do. The dove was resting and he had no idea about the

bird catcher. An ant quickly bit him on the foot. Feeling the pain, the bird

catcher dropped his net and let out a light scream. The dove noticed it
