3.3 Construction requirements for windows

Windows shall not be located at a height less than 865mm from the finished floor surface level. The window panel, if open able
shall not create a gap of more than 125 mm from them all when opened.
The window assembly, shall have reinforced glass and shall be able to withstand a single concentrated load of 0.89 KN, applied
in any direction at any point.
There should not be any construction features at the bottom of the window which can be translated into ladder or climbing
feature.

In addition to above; the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code specifies specific areas where Compartmentation
should be in place, this is due to the UAE
Fire and Life Safety Code considers the areas as rooms with higher hazards than the remainder of the building:

Staircases must be constructed of RCC concrete for more than 15m in height. Each Stair shall be separated
with 2-hour fire separation from rest of the building.

3.4 Compartmentation Requirements

Every compartment wall and compartment should form a complete barrier to fire between compartments
they separate and have the appropriate fire resistance when tested in accordance to NFPA 251 Standard
Methods of Tests of Fire Resistance of Building Construction and Materials, dependent on the occupancy and
fire load present within the compartment enclosure.

Any opening or penetration in compartment walls should not breach the integrity of the compartment wall;
therefore, doors in a compartment wall must have an appropriate fire resistance to maintain the integrity of
the compartment wall.

Any building services penetrating a compartment wall would need to be fire stopped or sealed to ensure that
there are no breaches in the compartments they separate.

The compartment wall should form a complete barrier between the compartment they separate, and
therefore needs to continue from slab to slab, including floor and ceiling voids where provided.

4. MEANS OF EGRESS

4.1 General
The general principle to be followed when designing for means of egress is that occupants confronted by Any door assembly in means of egress shall be of the side-hinged or pivoted-swinging type and shall be

Therefore, provisions of means of warning and alternative escape/egress routes should be made available installed. The force required to fully open any door leaf manually in a means of egress shall not exceed 67
from all parts of the building. N to release the latch, 133N to set the leaf in motion, and 67N to open the leaf to the minimum required
width.
The total capacity of the means of egress must be sufficient for the occupant load to allow for an easy flow Door leaves required shall swing in the direction of egress travel unless the door serves an area with an
of escaping occupants. The occupant load in any building or portion shall be not more than the number of occupant load of less than 50 people. In these places, such as individual offices, storage rooms, pantries or
persons determined by dividing the floor area by the occupant load factor assigned to that use. toilets, the doors located in egress access passageways may open inwards.

The egress routes shall be continuously maintained free from all obstruction or impediments to provide full Panic exit devices shall be provided on doors that serve more than 100 occupants; this includes staircase

exits or the exit access.

4.2 Means of Egress Components

4.2.1 Doors
Every door and every principle entrance that is required to serve as an exit shall be designed and
constructed so that the path of egress travel is obvious and direct.
Doors opening in means of egress shall be not less than 915mm in clear width, as per UAE Fire and Life
Safety Code.
Where a pair of door leaves is provided, one door leaf shall provide not less than 810 mm clear width
opening.
Bathroom doors serving a room not exceeding 6.5 m2 and not required to be accessible to persons with
severe mobility impairments shall be not less than 710 mm in door leaf width.
Minimum door width of a balcony, not used for an assembly usage, shall not be less than 810 mm. 4.2.2 Width of Egress Routes
Minimum door width of an exit stair having a width equal to or more than 1420 mm, shall be not less than The clear width of any corridor or passageways serving any occupant load, shall not be less than 1200mm.
two thirds of the required width of stairway. Egress width shall not narrow down in the direction of egress travel.
