Vertical Transportation

1. STANDARDS USED
The design, manufacture and installation of the Vertical Transportation system and associated
Components shall be to the entire satisfaction of the client.
The project will adhere to all parts of all relevant codes and regulations in respect of this new installation
and to all Standards referred to therein.
rec All works and equipment shall comply with, but not be limited to the latest version of the following:
• EN 81 – 20
• EN 81 ‐ 72
• EN 1S0 12100‐2
• BS EN 5656‐2
• ISO 4190
• CIBSE Guide D, Transportation Systems in Buildings
• The Lift Directive 1999
• All local and client specific standards, to be advised.
Discussions must be made with a local fire consultant as they may have additional requirements over
and above the contents of this report.
2. DESIGN BENCHMARKS
The following criteria has been used to define the configuration for the lift: ‐
• Typical population numbers as provided March 2019 have been used in this analysis at this initial
point.
• Population factor to be estimated at 90% of total capacity of the building
• Population factors for each bed room has been based on the following:‐

The lift will be from a ‘Machine Room Less’ range

CIBSE Guide D reference used: ‐
To indicate what the level of service will be the following values should be the target: ‐
Average Waiting Time – 45 seconds maximum – but as low as possible
5 minute 2‐way Handling Capacity to be a minimum of 5% but as high as possible

3. BUILDING POPULATION LEVELS

This concept Traffic Analysis has been conducted using Elevate Ver 8.24
And the same submitted to DDA along with traffic analysis result and exception for no. of lifts to be 2 for each building obtained

4. PASSENGER LIFTS
The traffic analysis has determined that 2 x 13 person lifts will be required to effectively transport the
population of the building but as this building is for Residential use there is also a need to transport large
Pieces of furniture in and out of the building as tenants come and go and as such one of the lifts should
be of 17 person capacity. This larger lift will also allow for a ‘typical’ stretcher with a typical length of
2100mm to be used inside the lift.
The lift will be designed, manufactured and installed to comply with EN 81‐20 and BS 4190, below are
The typical details of the Lifts as a start point for the design, the size and shape.
During the following design stages the preferred size/capacity of lifts can be agreed and more definitive
Shaft dimension provided.

PIT & HEADROOM DETAILS

Below are typical pit and headroom dimensions as supplied by all major lift companies for the designed
speed of 1m/s as defined within the Traffic analysis.

FIRE FIGHTING LIFT

• Due to the height of these Buildings above Ground ‐ Fire Fighting lifts will be required.
• Any lift above 8 persons (630Kg) in each core can act as a Fire Fighting lift
• Any firefighting/evacuation control system will be sited at a designated floor, exact floor to be
advised but normally on the main entrance/exit floor.
• Any firefighting/evacuation lifts will require 2 power supplies from separate dedicated control
Panels. The change‐over switch from standard power to emergency power can be supplied by the
Lift Company but the changeover of power must occur in 0.5 seconds therefore the secondary supply
Must be capable of immediate response.
• Any Evacuation lifts will require secure lobbies at each floor. To be discussed.
• Any Evacuation lift shafts will need to be pressurized to ensure that they do not fill with smoke rendering
them unusable. To be discussed
• The lift shafts will require a drain in each lift pit in the form of a sump and sump pump or a drain. Each
will be required to remove any water at a minimum of 25 liters per minute, see below:‐
• Each landing entrance of the firefighting/evacuation lifts will require a ramp up to each entrance of
a minimum of 25mm to stem the flow of water into the lift shaft, see sketch above:‐
• The lifts on this project will be designed to meet the current firefighting regulations.

"GeN2" ‐ the Green elevator

Re‐imagined......Features and Benefits:

Construction savings:
No Separate machine room required with reduced shaft, pit, and overhead dimensions, increasing rentable space.
With machine on rails, loads are directly transferred to the pit, reducing structural costs.
Regenerative Drive:
Potential energy difference between car and counterweight loading conditions is transferred into green electrical
power for re-use with 40% lesser energy consumption than conventional drivers.
Fire Rated Landing Doors:
Prevents flames and smoke from spreading through the vertical vacuum elevator shaft, protects the elevator
cabin/passengers while travelling/passing through fire affect floors, for 2 hours.
Energy Efficiency:
Permanent Magnet (PM), low-inertia, gearless motor is 50% more efficient than conventional geared machines
with VDI 4707 Category A, resulting in substantial energy & operational cost savings.
Space saving:
Minimum sheave diameter of 8cm, newer machine saves 70% of the space of geared machines.
Lubrication-free:
Requires no lubrication. GeN2 received ISO 14001, for environmentally responsible productions methods.
Durable and flexible:
Oil type coated steel belt reduces vibration and offers smooth rides, more traction, 20% lighter and has
3 times longer lifetime than conventional steel ropes.
Electronic Belt Monitoring:
PULSE electronic system which monitors the condition and quality of the belt’s steel cords 24/7d, and automatically
informs technicians, contrary to current conventional and visual inspection methods.
Reliable Controller:
Incorporates a new generation of printed circuit boards and software, a digital speed encoder to ensure correct car
position and speed, maximum system performance, and dramatically reduced waiting times.
Accurate Door Systems:
The car and landing doors are driven by a Variable Frequency Variable Voltage (VVVF) permanent magnet PM motor.
A speed encoder on the operator axis controls the door’s opening and closing positions allowing accurate and smooth operation.
Smooth Drive:
A gearless machine with VVVF control providing a comfortable ride with a stopping accuracy of +/- 3mm.
Quite Ride:
The Oil type belts eliminate the metal-to-metal sound of conventional steel cables against the driving sheave. Also, paddings
isolate car platforms from the car frame and the machine beams in the Hoistway.
Slotted sills:
Prevents debris from inhibiting door movements.
Emergency & Inspection panel:
Safe, accurate diagnostics, located adjacent to last landing door.
